I'm wondering if is worth purchasing about 12 dozen crawlers online and taking them into canada when I go in about a month? I believe I have to buy them washed and in bedding that isn't dirt, right? Or is it just more hassle than it is worth?

They must be in bedding.

Gulp will do the job for you. Get some minnow grubs too, pearl white and chartreuse.

Talk to your local bait shop. You can usually get them "Canada ready" for a few extra dollars and you'd probably save some money if they'd sell you a half flat.
