I just had the chance of picking up a Saltist 30 HA reel from a friend a few weeks ago I just realized that it has the more line pic up 35" . It also is smaller in size and in weight than a Tranx reel. I was told that this reel blows the DCGirls out of the water if you choose to. anyone using this reel? seems like it has Big gears and alot of torque. JB

Lots of discussion on this reel already. It burns blades with ease and its pretty tough.

This is a Nice reel that is a real Power House with 6/1 gears it has 35'' line pickup, and it does weigh a hair less than the Tranx PG,it also has a levelwind wihile casting which the Tranx PG does not have, they are both Saltwater Safe, but you do have to engage the reel after every cast. But the question is are you willing to engage the reel after every cast for a Savings of over $300? New TranxPG $499 Saltist $189 $300 gets you a few nice Lures...........
The Tranx PG is the reel that is the most popular for double 10 and 13 so that is what I was comparing. Please remember this is JMO Mike

I believe the new black Saltists have an auto engage now where the reel engages with the turn of the handle.

The Tranx is out of my league, and I'm considering a Saltist or a 400 Lexa. The Lexa is another you may want to consider. Probably not as proven for blades as the Saltist but the 6.3 or 7.1 ratios pick up quite a bit of line.

I own a Saltist and love it! Burns blades, even with the non auto engage you really get used to snapping that lever forward apposed to turning the reel. More often then not I find myself trying to close my Revo Toro because I am so used to it on the Saltist.

Saltist has great line pickup for burning the big stuff. Id recommended this reel to anyone

The new black saltist auto engages after one full turn of the handle. I love mine for plastics, marabou blades, and weighted flashabou blades. I have to try not to blow my double 10's out of the water because it's that easy with this thing, I'm always reminding myself to slow down. The only reason I'm looking to sell mine is that it doesn't cast lighter lures like cranks or un-weighted flashabou blades as well as I'd like and as I only use 1 setup, I need a reel that I'm confident with no matter what I'm throwing. Due to the lack of spool brakes you have to be very good with your thumb for lighter/less aerodynamic lures and I'm not as good as I should be. If it had a spool brakes I'd have no reason to look at another reel.

Like a few have said, this is a budget powerhouse. The only real short coming is the casting. I got lucky and picked up a Tranx PG during the four week period in 2013 where they dropped into the $330-$380 range. That thing is in another league.

Brand new. I think Shimano sold to a few redistributors that didn't mind hucking products out there for lower margins and destroying the market price for everyone. As a result, there was a brief period there where you were seeing Tranx's for very low prices. I'm guessing Shimano cut those guys off as prices are back up around $400 which seems closer to the value of these reels.

It'll be interesting to see if Shimano adjusts its pricing to in response to these Lexa 400's.

i bought one of musky hunter47's reels. its a PG and that thing is awesome burns 10 blades plenty fast and pulls supermodels like butter. I like it even more because i didn't have to pay full price for it. Keep an eye out on ebay and the buy sell adds on here. Good deals pop up.

there's a tranx hg for $400 in the buy/sell forum spooled w/ powerpro. It's not a PG, but it'll still be easier to do DCG than most reels
