Anybody out there troll bucktails? I have ben doing so but they are really twisting my line bad. I prefer them over spinnerbaits when the weeds are almost at the surface. It does not seem to matter which brand I troll, they all twist my line. I use a good sampo ball bearing swivel on my leader too. I was thinking of putting a small trolling rudder in front of the leader.

What bucktails do you like to troll? Has anybody had the same problem?

Todd,
For the most part I'll troll hair over the weed flats so the spinnerbait seems to work better in that type of fishing situation. I have only trolled straight shaft bucktails on a few occasions and then I ran them behind a trolling rudder.

Todd;
Have you tried any type of "keel weight"body on the
wire .It would be like the spinners that supposedly
stopped line twist years ago .

Try putting a 90 degree bend in the spinner shaft just behing the eye. The bucktail will still run fine and it will keep it from twisting the line. I know it sounds odd, but after reading about it somewhere, I tried it and it works.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. I have alot of bucktails and would like to troll them more otherwise they don't get much use. I just have more of a variety of them than spinnerbaits. I only have the problem when I flatline them. If I use a board it is not bad. I may try the rudder. In some situations the few inches of extra clearance makes the difference in clearing lines and trolling on.

This works?  Anyone try this way before?

I have done the same, worked well for me. I've trolled both dbl 10's and 13's this way and it solved the problem.

Keel Weight, 4' leader. I use a custom trolling rod with 100# test for this presentation. Usually run 4-6MPH.

I do it when casting as well, once the bait seems like it will never run right again after being bit this solves the problem. It literally will not spin... you don't even need the swivel.

I trolled a vibrax with a dipsey and caught fish with it. You have to run a 6' leader for anything bigger. They make a slide diver like a dipsey but you can run any amount of line behind. Have some going to try it.
