DBL 10s are great and you can't beat bull dawgs.

I don't know where these places are either but best advice just stick with it. As far as lures go bucktails are my top choice when the water is'nt too deep but i go to crankbaits and jerkbaits If the water is 12ft+. I tend to think that success in musky fishing is alot more about fishing the right location verses the right baits. Just stick with it and try as many differnt locations as you can. Keep you eyes open as your lures approach the boat and figure 8, if your getting follows that means your atleast in a decent spot.

Probably gonna take more than the magic lure to help you out. Boat control and timing is more important.

Dont see much talk here about Muskies out of West Virginia... Although, I do remember an article in a fishing magazine, not sure which, from many years ago titled, "Muskies has no virtues"... It was mainly about muskies out of West Virginia... Several photos were of 50+ monsters (sorry to say they werent CPR'ed and was held up by their gill plates)... I remember the article talked about Burnsville and Stonecoal and how homemade lures and bucktails really worked well... ... Im sorry I cant be any more of a help seeing how Im from Minnesota...

Either the fishery has really gone down in West Virginia, or there are still plenty of Monsters in there and people are definitely shutting up...

Is it almost heaven? The easiest things to work towards connecting with a fish are probably bucktails and crankbaits. Most fish--even muskies--are not giants. Have you been throwing lures designed to catch giants? If so, why not try some 6" crankbaits that have a good track record? Six inch Depthraiders, Believers, and for shallow water, Jakes and Wileys might be an answer. In fact, some very big fish have been caught on the 5.5" Wiley. If you go to a 6" Jake, try downsizing your hooks to a size 1. You will get better action. You gotta get the fish to hit, before you can put him in the net. Just a thought.

If you are looking for a first fish, I would recommend the buckhannon river. I'd recommend throwing gliders and spinnerbaits this time of year, and topwaters in the mix in a month or two. Stonewall and Stonecoal can be tough, most people are trolling.

If you're looking for a 1st fish, concentrate more on boat control like using the wind or anchoring. That was the advice I got from Jim Murphy a long time ago. You're casting technique and baits are the easy part. The best trip starts with knowing where the wind is- Sneek up on spots using the wind. Make sure to figure 8. Pick best times to fish- low light 4pm to 9pm. Make sure hooks are sharp, reels lubed, drags set right, net handy. I don't mean to sound preachy, but like someone said earlier, its not so much the right bait as its the right presentation- starting with your boat.

Look into the Elk River Musky Club they fish all the local water up there good people should point you in the right direction. Double Tens, Mag Dawgs, and they throw a lot of shayla shads and musky dawg cranks from Leo Lures.

Hey my name is Shawn and I have been fishing west virginia waters for about 12 years. Go buy an AC Shiner 00 model and cast it in any creek that holds musky. You'll get bit. Also I may be going to stonewall jackson to troll for musky friday. If you want you can tag along and I'll try and teach ya some things and I'll even give ya first fish (if we get one).
let me know.
