Is the hard drive just for saving marks or is it used for more? Can any hard drive be used or does it have to be a certain type. And if so where can you get one?

The hard drive is where you save waypoints and any other data to. With the new HDS units you will be saving yout structure scan images to it and with both the bird and Lowrance you can record sonar to it. I have no idea what type of hard drive can be used to replace one, I would assume any, but since all units are sealed to wqaterproof them, its not easy to replace and like any other computer you would need to program the hard drive to read the company's software and run its operating system after the install so when they go down you pretty much have to send them in.
