Subject: Tackle Management

Time to talk tackle management. Not looking for product reviews or promotion but theory into tackle selection. With the limited space in my boat I'm trying to come up with a system for selecting the baits to bring with. I came up with this. In my boat I keep a selection of various baits in two basic colors natural sucker and firetiger. Gives me a lot of different bait actions to test to see whats working. I then keep the remaining selection back in the truck or cabin if a particular bait gets hot. Also if I know that a certian bait is hot I'll bring a bunch of those in the boat.

instead of looking at them as baits, consider them tools and have a couple to work the various positions in the water column (top, mid, deep)
- aggressive (top, mid, deep)
- neutral (top, mid, deep)
- negative (top, mid, deep)
baits get overwhelming for a lot of folks and become a rate-limiter it you go overboard and just have too many ...

develop a system, get focused on presentation and equip yourself with the tools to do what you're trying to do which is to catch fish and not build a collection of baits.

single biggest misnomer in this sport is that you have to own a ton of baits and a fleet of rod/reel combos in order to be succesful.

aggressive = pacemaker/water-chopper, double 10, straight raider or grandma ripped aggressively
neutral = jackpot, ddd, straight raider or grandma twitched
negative = weagle/hawg wobbler, hellhound, jointed raider

i hate rubber ... but like someone in the boat who does.

another bait i'll be putting into the neutral/negative lineup is the shallow invader ... but, be sure to fix the hooks first.

I could honestly fish for the rest of my life and never need more than the following:

One light one dark; of each lure:

Double 10
Single bladed bucktail
Minnow Bait (Grandma)
Crank Bait (Depth Raider)
Safety Pin Spinner bait (CJ's)
Chop Bait (Suick)
Glider (Phantom)
Tail Prop (Top Raider)
WTD (Weagle)
Rubber (Bulldawg)

20 lures.

Bring them all. Every type. Every size. Every color. And then sit there and ponder them. What will work today? Believer, Depthraider, Jake, Wiley... Nine Dollar Bass, Sucker, Firetiger... What will work? Then look them over one more time and ask the most profound question: Why did I spend money on all this stuff?

Provided you actually listen to them... Like when they tell you to freespool after you've fougt a big fish all the way back to the boat and it decides to make one more run.
Sorry. had to.

See now the "they tell you to freespool" didnt actually occur. More the guide was yelling at what a big fish it was...not freespooling was my own moron mistake.

My baits all are stored in the rectangular plastic storage boxes. Those go into a tackle bag(s). Black marker on the visible end of the boxes makes IDing them easy.

If I know I'll be trolling for instance, I'll weed out the bucktails, topwaters and gliders, just as an example, and leave those at home. I seem to have acquired enough of several brand/style/size of some baits that one entire box is for just grandmas, one for just baby shallow raiders, kickin' minnows, etc.

I've got a couple empties up in the garage rafters.....so if I'm piling in with someone else, or traveling light for whatever reason, I'll just grab my fav 5-10 and a rod or two and I'm out the door.

Went fishing with a guy the other day (who is a successful muskie guy) and he shows up with a little cardboard box with four baits in it. Sled speaks the truth when he talks about thinking you have to have every bait made. I remember when I tied a fly in every color and size and now it's down to just a couple. Now the same applies to bucktails, pounders or Jakes, whatever. I carry too many baits, but fish my confidence baits and that's about it. I rolled this summer with probably 50-60 bucktails in my boat and fished literally three of them. Have a bait for the main array of presentations, and stick with your confidence baits within those confines. Unless you want to, you don't need to carry a walleye and a walleye/white tail pounder to catch fish. Carry the one you have confidence in, and fish it. I carry the white tail...
