I was wondering if anyone has had or heard of issues with the 2002-2004 115 Merc 4 stroke engines. Are they a good motor? I've been looking for a used boats. Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks

I Bought one in 2003, never layed a wrench on it, besides replacing plugs, oil, lower unit lube, impeller, which was fine but replaced anyway. All preventive maintenance.
I have run synthetic in it since it was new. Purrs like kitten

Love the motor, would buy another one in a heart beat

Do you like Yamaha motors? Almost the same thing.

Have a 2004 115, and yes it does have Yammy power plant. Mine has run great with no problems. 40+ days a year. Rarely but occassionally pull the kids on kneeboards or tubes if they want. Have no out of the hole issues, seems very reasonable to me, even loaded. Trolls in idle without problems. Has been a good motor.

I own one and have issues with it. If you would like an unbiased review of this engine call 231-722 - 4266 Sportfisherman sales and service in Muskegon Michigan. Ask for Jeff. Ask him about 2002 to 2004 Yamaha powered mercs and water in the crank cases. I was given( by Mercury) a 2004 4 stroke in place of a failed 115 optimax. I will say the 115 4 stroke has been much more reliable and has yet to fail me. However it is not as fast as the opti was and I hate changing the oil all the time. I fish more hours then most guys so this equates to changing the oil 4 to 5 times per season. If you are not going to troll much and dont fish every day the 115 4 stroke will be a great engine for you. Mike
