There's a new slow no wake law on every lake in Wisconsin within 100 feet of shoreline and it's not just the outter shoreline this law includes islands.
The only exception is dropping off and picking up water skiers.
This law does not include rivers from what I've been told.
If your fishing the bigger flowages sometimes the only safe passage is within 100
feet of shoreline or 100 feet of and island. I know this is going to add some time
heading to my favorite spots.I also wonder if the wardens will be handing out tickets like candy.

Good law. No need to be going wide open within 100 ft of shoreline, period.

I agree... you don't need to get to your favorite spot in 5 seconds flat.

I think the original poster is expressing concern about what this law will mean where it's always been common practice to travel on plane thru travel routes that are not 200 feet wide or are closer than 100 feet from shore. I'm familiar with some channels between lakes up north where traveling at speed is normal, but is no longer "legal" based on the new rule. I'm all for safety, but safety is really not an issue in these areas - unless you slow down to no wake speeds - you're then susceptible to get slammed by someone who is just doing what s/he's always done.

I agree with Pointer..... And I really like going from point A to point B as fast as I can...
So if your fishing 50ft from the shoreline, do you want someone blasting by you???????????????????
This is a NO brainer guys.......!

It should be common practice to know the boating regulations year in and year out. Period.

On the main lake I fish, there is a 300' no wake zone from shore. I have been casting 50' from shore and have people come flying through all the time. The DNR tries to enforce it, but they are out numbered. I was coming around a point last fall and had a jet skier round the bend about 30' from shore and miss me by about 3' at probably 25 mph. It was probably put into place to prevent erosion.

That has been the law on the Yahara Chain in the Madison area for years. It would be nice if somebody enforced it.

When we have had high water and they extend it to 500', I have scene them enforce that.....but the standard 100' rule doesn't ever seem to get enforced.

My understanding is that erosion control was one of the principal reasons for the change, as Trolling Thunder stated. The chain where we have our cottage has a couple of narrow channels and I see some high powered boats going very fast through them. I think their thinking is that on plane they have less wake than going slow. However, last year a big Ranger with a VMax flew through a channel near where I was on my boat and his wake went over the small dock just off the channel. That kind of wake can't be good for shoreline erosion.

I think the 100' water skier to land or boat needs to be enforced. Seems like they never care how close to you they are now your fishing between their dock and you and the tow boat come's within 20 yds of you and the skier just misses the reef hawg you threw at him but he still makes the dock, where is this ever enforced? It really leaves a bad taste when this is happening at 8:45 at nite in Vilas.

Unenforceable. That makes it a useless "feel good" law. I know a 400 acre lake that is insane with jet skiers and water skiers, are they going to stop or slow down by the islands? I doubt it. Hopefully it will help safety, but try telling some rich kid not to go fast in dad's 40k boat..ha!

Good intention, but unenforceable.

It's not enforceable because of the vast area of coverage for any given warden. In small towns where there is local law enforcement (i.e. a town constable) those laws are sometimes strictly enforced, and with good reason. Shoreline erosion causes a host of problems, it's a safety issue, and an annoyance for the local residents.

I don't see many tickets being handed out unless someone complains, and whoever is doing it makes a habit out of it.

The Ranger on the TFF said he was planning on writing tickets. I think the idea is a good one but what a pain in the a#$ on The Flowage. If people want to open it up out there they should be able to. It's very entertaining.

I like the idea, shoreline erosion only hurts the fish community. 100' really isn't that far when you look at it. Take a tape out once and I think many people will be suprised how fast the 100' mark comes up. I'd be in favor a a longer distance.

Yes, maybe the jet skiers will start getting tickets when they go buzzing by in front of me.

now we need a law that stops the maroons from driving their pontoon between me and shore while on their cruise looking at homes on the lake!
