I am fairly sure i need to replace the anti-reverse bearing on my Luna. When I pull hard on crankbaits, I can feel the spool slip every now and then. Anyone have any extra or know where I can order them? Also, how difficult are they to replace as I think I will try to fix the problem myself? Thanks for the input BG.

Sounds like it's definitely a problem with the AR bearing. Before you order a new one though, first wipe down the bearing with some paper toweling and get any grease or excessive oil out of there. Overtime, grease will work it's way from the gears into the bearing and that can cause it to slip. Most of the time it's excessive grease, other times I can see damaged springs in the bearing. They are easy to replace, I've never worked on a Luna but on other reels they just pop in.

Just tell them you need a roller clutch.
Easy to replace, make sure your drag washers are opposed when you reassemble.

I think it will come from Daiwa with grease in it, so when U get it I would soak it in Acetone, dry and just oil with say Hot sauce, maybe 2-3 drops of oil. Grease in the A/R Bearing will cause it to slip.

I just had mine replaced through Daiwa. Took about a week to get it fixed. Happened exactly a year after the purchase and luckily they covered it under the warranty,

They are easy to replace since unlike the Abu's, they are not pressed in place and are easily serviced once you take the cover off. I just got a couple from Mikes Reel Repair and it took a while for them to get them in.

This summer I blew out the AR on 4 of my Diawas including my Luna. I know this has been a problem with the Millionares, but I thought they took care of the problem with the Luna reel. I sent the reels into Diawa and got them back in 3 weeks. I'm getting frustrated with these reels as this has happened 3 times with the millionares. Wish I knew if its time to switch reels. Its getting so I end up taking up 6 extra reels along when I go to Canada for a week.

All Luna reels have no backup pawl for the Anti-Rev Bearing, all U have to do is use your thumb on the spool when you rip baits and on hook sets.

I had both of my Luna's do the same thing. I kept sending them in to get fixed and within 2 weeks to a month I would have the AR go out again. I think its a problem they can't fix. They sent me 2 brand new reels so we'll see how long they last.

On Luna reels U have to use your thumb on the spool there is no backup pawl for the A/R Bearing like Shimano Calcutta or Toro reels have, so any force greater then 15lb will blow out the A/R Bearing, on any reel unless it has a backup pawl. Lock down drag with 100lb braid and a XXXH rod and U will blow out the A/R Bearing. I have a Luna that is over 5 years old with the same A/R Bearing that it came with. For the $$$$ the Luna is a great reel, but U have to use your thumb on the spool to save the A/R Bearing.

Here is a pic of a Luna A/R Bearing as U can see the plastic cage that the rollers ride in, also U can see the plastic arms that keep the rollers from turning backwards, that is what will fail are the plastic arms. Also never use grease in any A/R Bearing, the grease will cause the bearing to slip and fail, U will see that in cold weather alot. I use 2-3 drops of oil in A/R Bearings. Funny because Daiwa Luna reels will come with grease in the A/R Bearing from Daiwa, which I don't understand Y they do that.

Richard,

What about for a Curado 300 DSV? My anti-reverse has gone or is going out (slipping when I work gliders, sometimes the whole handle spins backwards). Thoughts?

Richard,

What about for a Curado 300 DSV? My anti-reverse has gone or is going out (slipping when I work gliders, sometimes the whole handle spins backwards). Thoughts?

The size of the A/R Bearing that all std size musky reels use will slip at about 15-18lbs of force, the Cacutta, Toro, Curado reels have a backup pawl to keep the handle from spinning backwards, but U do that to many times even the A/R Pawl will slip and fail. That is Y I tell guys to PALM a reel so U can use your thumb on the spool ripping/jerking baits and on hook sets. Guys will say that they can rip a bait harder and hookset harder with using the foregrip of a rod maybe so ??? but when they blow out the A/R Bearing on there reel they are first to say that brand of reel is junk. Also when U are casting DCG10 U must stop them in the air to turn them around before they hit the water, so if U are palming a reel U can stop the spool with your thumb and then engage your reel after the spool has stopped to start reeling. I would say 99% of reel failures are cause by ripping / jerking Dawgs and engaging a reel when a bait is in the air. What is also funning is most new reels will come with grease in the A/R Bearing, I will cast a new reel for a day or two to sure it is Ok and then I will take it apart and clean out all the factory grease and oil and reoil and grease a reel the right way.

Flambeauski,

What do you mean have the drag washers opposed? There is a slight curve in them, so do they go )( or ()? Also the piece that fits in the center of the roller clutch- what direction should that go back in- it is non-symmettrical and I cannot tell from the reel schematic.

Thanks!

So for the Curado, can that be fixed by replacing the part?

You can do it either way, although I always put them in )(. I assume the other part you are referring to is the gear shaft collar? Cylindrical with two teeth?

If the drag washers are in order you will have a key washer on top with two notches on opposite sides. The two teeth fit into those notches so the flat side of the gear shaft collar is out. The drag washers and bearing washer and bearing will sit on top of the gear shaft collar.

YES most A/R Bearings are under $20.00 and I would also install a new A/R Pawl. I can do it 4 U just email me. I like to install the spring washers like ( ) but I know alot that do it like ) (

The rest of the story. So I order the new parts from Diawa. Install a new AR reverse bearing. Go to cast and it screams like I am torturing the reel. The problem with slippage is fixed but do I have to grease or oil the AR bearing to stop the squeel? Thanks BG

No, unscrew the side cap (opposite the handle) and put a drop of oil on the bearing in the center of the cap.

The AR bearing is disengaged when you cast. Squeel must be coming from something else, sounds like it wasn't put back together correctly.

If the drop of oil on that bearing doesn't fix your problem your idle gear is worn. A drop of oil on the screw that holds the idle gear in place will temporarily solve the problem, replacing the idle gear is the permanent solution, although its very easy to unscrew that side plate and oil those two parts, I never replace them.

Two teeth for those grooves, so that flat side gear shaft collar. Drag washers and bearing washers and bearings sit on top of the gear shaft collar.
