Just wondering if anyone has put this on there unit yet and tried it? Does it help or make it worse? I have the 2.3 version on right now.

The 2.4 version is good, however, there is default that automatically changes your transducer type. You need to go in and change your transducer type and change the unit to a shallow water mode.

To do so, you need to go to Menu, then sonar setup, change the transducer from a dual beam which is mainly for saltwater use, NOT freshwater for the most part. You then need to select the 200 khz only transducer, that will make running this new 2.4 version a lot better.

Here is a clip OutdoorsFirst did with Josh Roundsley of Thorne Brothers, he walks through how to do these changes.

Hi'
I have the 520c and have downloaded version 2.4, but I couldn't find the " shallow water option " or the "fishing mode" page shown on the video.
The unit does show version 2.4 as the current software, did I miss something or do the 500 series not have this option???

Thanks

I also have the 520 c and have been having issues with the unit
mainly what happens is it loses the signal and keeps flashing position lost - if you turn off the unit it will work but sometimes it cuts out again or other times it works nearly flawless it has been doing it for a while now and only seems to be getting worse - will downloading this version 2.4 solve my issue and if so how do I go about doing so - will I have to send unit to LOwrance , or is this something I can do myself?

You will need to download it from Lowrance's website and put it on a SD card. (You can borrow the one from your digital camera if you don't have one laying around) If your PC doesn't have a SD card reader you can get an external one that plugs in via USB. Once on the card just put it in and turn the unit on. It will automatically put the update on the unit. Watch the video posted above. I don't know if that will solve your issue but that's how you get the update.

I don't beleive the 520s have that shallow water mode as I am running 2.4 and don't have that option either.

One other thing to add or note. You must have at least 8MB of free space on the MMC/SD card in order for it to work.

Here are two links(first link for the 520, second link 522) to the Lowrance site that explains in detail of how to download properly.

Lowrance 520c 2.4 version update instructions:
http://www.lowrance.com/en/Products/Marine/Full-Size-SonarGPS-Chart...

Lowrance 522c 2.4 version update instructions:
http://www.lowrance.com/en/Products/Marine/Full-Size-SonarGPS-Chart...

*Note:

If you look on the bottom of the page of the links provided above, it shows exactly what is included in the version 2.4 update.

One of the improvements this version is suppose to help with is:

Improved sonar digital depth tracking in weeds and over bluffs

You said your losing a signal and keeps flashing your position is lost. I take it your talking about your gps signal?

I do not personally have the Lowrance 520c, but I have sent an email to the Lowrance Technician so hopefully I'll be able to answer about the shallow water mode on the 520.

Hi again,
After my earlier post I took the boat out for the first time with the 520c and version 2.4.
The unit worked VERY well in shallow water, I ran in depths as shallow as 3ft with weeds and I never lost bottom signal or had a lock up. I did keep my speeds down to about 2-5 miles per hour.
I do believe that I need to adjust my transducer height though, as I lose the bottom contour at higher speeds, but I don't lose the depth reading.
I'll adjust it and chime in later.

Merckid thanks for the reply, will talk to you later.

Jaimey

The 520 series does not have the shallow water mode.

Also a quote from the Lowrance Tech:

"The 2.4 is MUCH better then the 2.3. The 2.4 version covers several different issues not just the shallow water setting."

I've got a 520C, the 2.4 version seems to be a great improvement. I cannot however, get the transducer to keep it's depth and contour reading at speed. I've tried different heights/angles/positions to no end. Should the transducer be below the hull or above? I believe I currently have it below and it's better but still not great.

TIA
Jeff

Can you post a picture of the transducer? More than likely it has to do where it's located.
