PRO MUSKY TRAIL'S VISIT TO POMME DE TERRE SIGNALS A MISSOURI FIRST

"MDC Musky Fisheries & Local 'Show Me State' Anglers Get Great Opportunity To Strut Their Stuff"

Bob "the Fin-Addict" Osborne
PMTT Publicity Manager

Missouri Department of Conservation's outstanding efforts in the area of developing, improving and maintaining a world-class muskellunge fishery, going back well into the 60's, are being both recognized and spotlighted at the national level the week-end of May 21st & 22nd when the Professional Musky Tournament Trail comes to Pomme de Terre Lake for the second of four national 2005 World Championship qualifying events and a first ever visit to sample Missouri's excellent musky waters. The PMTT, now entering a record-breaking seventh year, added "Pomme" to this seasons list of venues after contestant surveys showed it to be the top requested new water for both of the past two years, said Tournament Director and PMTT Co-Founder, Tim Widlacki. "Bringing the PMT Trail here not only gives these top anglers the challenge of competing on new water but, and equally important, it gives avid musky anglers in this region of the country an excellent opportunity to become a part of the growing excitement that is musky fishing today."

Located in the southwestern portion of the state's Hickory and Polk counties and managed since 1966, Mark Boone, fisheries biologist and Muskellunge Program Advisor for the MDC cited this as the "Show Me" state's best all-round numbers lake for musky according to a 2002 angler study showing a heavy population of 30 to 36-inch plus fish while the local Chapter of Muskies Inc. reports catch and release records of mature fish exceeding 50-inches! "10,600 11-inch fingerlings were stocked in 2000, but then we had to go to 13-inch fish since 2001 to reduce wholesale predation by bass and herons, and it appears to be working well." The largest of several Missouri Conservation Department muskellunge program lakes; Pomme de Terre has about 7,800 surface acres with over 100 miles of shoreline accessible from several well-maintained public boat ramps. Hopeful casting anglers will find shoreline structure aplenty in the form of docks, flooded timber, stumps and brush. Shallow flats, rocky points as well as more than 80 brush piles help attract popular bait species like gizzard shad, carp and suckers while trollers will find deeper water along bluffs, old creek channels and nearer the dam.

Immediate live-release, no transport, proper handling/release bonus points and the use of Judge Boats are only a few of the industry leading fish-friendly practices developed and utilized by the PMTT over the past six seasons... as are the very unique and surprisingly exciting public "Virtual Weigh-In" ceremonies conducted at the end of each days competition. Digital photos of every release are displayed on the wide-screen... length & points are calculated ... the days top teams interviewed regarding tactics/bait/location... with the leader board being slowly revealed in reverse order... one-by-one over the course of the two days... eventually leaving only the $20,000 1st Place winners*!

Mary & Dail Graham's Eagles Nest Resort (417-852-4301) in Pittsburgh will officially host attending PMTT contestants with on-the-water take-off and check-in from nearby State Park Marina in Pittsburgh both days. All of the exciting off-water action will be taking place at Tournament Central ... the MCCARTY SENIOR CENTER, located just off Hwy 54 near Wheatland. Circle those dates folks ... Saturday May 21st & Sunday May 22nd ... Learn from the Pros ... be a part of the action ... and help to show your support for this first ever event and Missouri Musky fishing. Anyone can join the PMTT and enter this fast-growing and addictively exciting competition... and everybody is warmly invited to come out and join the fun.

Great to see more southern waters getting the exposure they deserve! More than most events, I look forward to seeing how anglers from all over the country will fare on totally new waters.
