Long story short, the wife found out I had a nice sling blade and took it over as her own. Sweet rod obviously. Last night she snapped it in half on a cast. Bummer but I need to replace it. Thinking about upgrading to the big nasty for her. I use the rod for smaller bucktails and topwater a lot. Does anyone use the big nasty for small bucktails and and topwater, or is it overkill? I’ve never held one so I don’t know.

Define small bucktails and topwater. Everyone has a different view.

I have booth. The Nasty is much stiffer in the tip and not as user friendly with smaller bucktails in the wind. Out of the wind or at your back its fine but you may loose a little distance. I use the Nasty for Cannon Ball Jr's and it does a nice job but the Sling Blade gets most of my Prop Style top water baits. I feel its a quicker hook set once you feel contact with the shorter rod. That being said if you start mixing in paddle tails like the Posidon the Nasty out shines the Sling Blade on those... One mans HO...

Its great for Double 8's I use it myself. You will be shocked how far you can toss them with that rod. I also toss top waters that are a few oz on mine as well. I do add a little extra weight to my 8's like 1/2oz vs the 3/8. to each their own I guess Im willing to give up some casting distance for the benefit of the stiffer rod which is effortless figure 8's.

Put it this way. I use a 9’6” Thorne bros predator for the big stuff. I want something a little heavier and longer than the sling blade. Is the big nasty going to work for that?

big nasty is a good rod ...... Keith at Pro Edge has another blank that is pretty sweet too. I think he makes them custom for 270 ish... I have a few of them from sling blade action to big nasty action.

^^This!

I had a Sling Blade, Big Dawg, and Big Nasty at the same time.  I loved the sling blade for anything in the box up to double 9s and mag dawgs.  Of the bunch, it's the best casting rod for lighter baits by far.

The Nasty was used for double 9's or bigger mostly because of control in the figure 8 but the sling blade was easier to cast no doubt.  It really falls right in between the Sling Blade and Big Dawg.  It's a great rod for 9s, 10s, and mag dawgs and still usable but not ideal for almost all the baits it my box.

I didn't like the Big Dawg for anything really.  I only used it for ripping bulldawgs hard or going as fast as I comfortably could with blades.  It was a terrible caster with most baits I use.

I use an XH Pred as well and the Nasty is not as meaty as the XH. I use it mainly for Big Jerks but also mag dawgs, paddle tails etc.. It can toss a pounder but not as well as an XH. The other option would be get a H Pred with 1 or 2 off the tip and keep it @ 9. I have a 9'4 H with 2 off the tip and its a dream for all bucktails from Showgirls to Super Model's...

I have a heavy Predator with -1 on the tip. It can toss a small bucktail a mile but I wouldn’t toss anything over double 8’s with that rod. You can really feel that rod load in the eight.

I’ll be doing the warranty deal with croix so any other rod is out. Thanks for all the insight. Lots to think about

I love the big nasty for 8's, 9's, and 10's. I wouldn't go as light as the sling blade.

You won’t regret the big nasty, definitely a sweet blank! I use it for everything from fat b’s to cowgirls and big crankbaits like mag shallow invaders to poseidons...

Since it's for your wife, will she be comfortable with longer rod and rear grip if it's a split grip. If she likes the sling blade, I would get another sling blade and buy a nasty for yourself

Sling Blade with a curado/tranx 300 is the ultimate combo for my wife.  I couldn't pry the sling blade out of her hands no matter what she was using and she caught a bunch of fish on it.

Both are sweet rods, I switched to the nasty after breaking my slingblade to try it. Everything about the nasty seemed better until I fished with it. Ended up trading a buddy back for the slingblade as it's just much more forgiving and versitile IMO. Only time I wish it had just a little more backbone is really burning figure 8s boatside with big blades but if I was buying for my wife I'd go slingblade. Doubt you're disappointed either way.
