So can someone please describe the proper way to set up a reel with regards to the spool tension knob and the centrifugal breaks?

What kind of reel? Line tensioner I adjust it to the weight of the lure. To tight it won't cast very far and to loose line will back lash in your reel. Find the happy spot! Breaks it would depend on the reel. My tranx 500 I like to pull out every other.

As a starting point, I've always let the bait hang from the end of the rod, pressed the button, and adjusted to the specific lure. You want the lure to fall smoothly on its own. If it doesn't move, you're way too tight, if it moves smoothly you're perfect, and if it drops to the water like a cannonball, you're too loose. Once you get used to casting, I'd say a touch on the loose side is preferred for a bit more casting distance, as long as you can control the spool with your thumb.

Most reels I work on guys have adjusted the cast control way too tight. This often dimples the tension spacer and pushes the spool shaft off to the side rather than remaining centered, and robs the reel of casting performance.

I set mine up as loose as possible. My baits drop quickly on free spool. I never use internal braking systems. So as you can see it's individual preferences on set ups.

From my experience the centrifugal brakes need to be adjusted infrequently for each reel based on the pole you have it and your individual casting motions for that rod and reel and the lures you tend to use for that set-up. I typically adjust the spool tension fairly loose and and adjust for the lure you are using at the time allowing it drop fairly easily on free spool.

I haven’t used centrifugal brakes in a long time but from what i remember they really cut your casting distance. Mags work ok when casting in the wind. Crank up your mags with lighter baits and wind. Heavy lures you dont even need em on thumb should be enough. As for tension knob should be set so that your lure falls to the ground at 50-75% gravity speed.

I hate to tell you but for Musky Fishing forget about your Lure hitting the floor setup
If you are casting lures over 3 oz run with 4 to 6 spool brakes ON, Cast Control so the spool has no side play in the frame then a quarter turn more and don’t touch.
I can’t believe guys run no spool brakes, very Bad Idea !!!!!!

what is bad about turning spool brakes off?

I very seldom Bomb Cast, So I set the reel up so I don’t have to thumb the spool on every cast to stop overruns. One slip of the thumb and you got a Bird Nest !!!!
Plus I keep my Cast Control Knob on the loose side, just so the spool has no play in the frame, I’ll never dimple the spool bearings washers. Just so much Easier Casting not having to Thumb the spool all the time. When you are Casting Baits over 3 oz the reel needs to be controlled with spool brakes. You will not lose any Casting distance When Casting Heavy Baits with 4 / 6 spool brakes on.
