Location: mercer wi | Solid ring on leader split ring on bait. Been doing this for 4 years now never a fail. I change split rings every year on baits that get used alot. Had a mid 30 smash a stay lock before never trusted again. |

I'm with Dave on this one. I use solid steel leaders as I've had a couple of bite-offs with fluorocarbon, so I take my split ring on the lure directly to the loop I make on the steel leader.
In spring when I am using a lighter leader and small lures, I have to be a little more watchful of the split ring as it sometimes has had a tendency to start working its way off. The heavier leaders used on other baits this is not an issue.

| I use Stay-Lok. Question for those that use split ring to solid ring connection, do you have a split ring pliers you can recommend? I had two in the boat for years, one was Berkley I think, the other Rapala. Late in the season I had used the Berkley (?) to put new hooks on a lure after having to cut a couple hooks on a fish and somehow managed to drop it into the lake as I moved to put it away. Like to have two of everything, just in case, and thought that some on this thread could provide tips on the pliers they found most effective/easy to use. (I have some arthritis in both hands so easy to use would be good) |

Location: mercer wi | These are the ones I use, can't remember brand. Musky shop carried them for awhile. Best I've used. The Rapala ones they carry now look the same. I like the big tooth it really splits the ring wide especially for larger wire bucktails when 1st putting them on lures or old dawg with the jig hook on them.

| Thanks for the replies. The Xuron look good and being available on Amazon makes it easy! Hopefully, I won't drop them in the lake. I have lost needle nose before unhooking a fish but losing that split ring plier was a first. Still not sure how I managed that. |
