My wife and i are looking at a property on baby. I personally never fished it but it looks pretty nice. I was wondering for those who still fish it is it still a numbers but smaller fish lake? Also how is it for multi species? Thank in advance for any responses.

It is still a numbers lake and the fish run smaller due to the Shoepac strain genetics still being present. If you happen to catch a 45" out of Baby you have caught a real giant.

I saw properties on Baby as well. But I wanted more acres. Baby is a great lake. Full of smallies too. It is a better overcast or night lake imo. If you have a small enough boat you could go under the bridge just up the lake from one property for sale on the east side and get into Mann Lake. Nice smallies and muskies there too. Lotsa good lake choices in that area.

I envy you. If I knew you I'd convince you of the joys of fly fishing for them, smallies too. You'd find another love that's nearly all-consuming....but in a different way!

Best of luck. I'd have a ball fly-rodding around there....

DJ,

Gotta set the record straight... A few years ago, the lake next to Baby no longer has 2 N's in it. It went to a vote of the people and the people felt it should be like all the other pronoun lakes around, so out came the chain saw.. It's now quicker to say and respond.

How small of a boat is needed to get through to Man? I've been considering property on this lake too, but if I couldn't get into Man, it seems a little small. Plus I'd like the opportunity to get to the bigger fish as well.

I'd have a 17.5' Crestliner Fish Hawk with a 115 Yamaha on it.

It's almost impossible to get under that bridge with any boat over 14' long that is of the deep v variety. My buddy gets under with an old 14' Tuffy tri hull with a small 15hp motor on his boat.

I used to get in there with an old 16 foot Lund with a 25 horse 1978 Evinrude kicked up. I laid on the floor and pulled myself through. I got in the water and walked the boat thru on the way back.

Baby is a great smallie lake and Man is a good smallie lake with great bluegill fishing. I think that Man might be a better walleye lake just because of more cloudy water. I believe that Baby is probably best hit early or at dusk/dark- it is very clear.

Man has not received the stocking like baby has for walleyes, but the dnr is now doing some which will help. Back in the middle 70s we could catch a few, but once the DNR started pulling eggs and milt between woman and child lake, the number of fish fell off significantly.

I've caught very few walleyes in man yet and it is my home lake.
