Looking to plan a trip for July 2019 in Morson area. Just looking for a cabin closest to the the better musky area. Would you suggest staying closer to Morson (Red Wing, Buena Vista resorts), with access to Sababkong? Or stay in the Miles Bay area (Grassy Narrows, Rex Tolten's)? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What type of water do you like? How big of a boat? Do you like to run or stick close to camp?

I’ve found the best fishing to be out in the big water but it isn’t exactly a “Canada” experience fishing the big brown water near Morson. Miles Bay is more of a Canada feel, though you will be even less alone as far as fishing pressure goes. If you are willing to boat in stay at Tamarack. Great central location and many positive reports. I’ve always stayed at BVR. Has what we need. You may want to trailer your boat each night at BVR. Some trips the wind is no big deal but others if there is a big westerly the docks are hardly sheltered.

If you prefer a little smaller water I suggest you pick one of the island camps east of Morson. Sabaskong Bay, Kings etc. Lots of water and fish over that way with less concern of big water.

Options will be limited as July is the most popular month and many resorts are booked solid that time of year. Sooner the better. Be flexible with your schedule and you shouldn't have an issue getting into a place.

I second Tamarack Island lodge. We go the 3-5 times each year. It has great fishing close to camp, but is centrally located to easily run anywhere you like. I just can't deal with all the pressure in and around Morson, and you have to make a decent run each day just to get to where you want to be fishing anyway.

I run a 19.5 multi species Tuffy with a 200 opti. Of course I’d like to stay close, but I’m not afraid to run. I’m pretty much asking if the fishing is better in the Miles Bay Area vs Sabaskong Bay? I’ve contacted the above mentioned resorts and they have openings. Just trying to decide where to go.

I appreciate the heads up regarding the poor wind protection at Buena Vista. I see that they have outhouses at Miles Bay resort. Is that nasty or are they pretty clean?

The fishing west of Sabaskong Bay itself is better than both Miles Bay and Sabaskong Bay in my opinion. And I've fished all three fairly extensively. Don't know anything about Miles Bay resort.

You might consider upgrading to a 300 hp. Speed is critical up there.

Red Wing is a solid place. Nice cabins and nice people. Good electricity to the docks. AC in the cabins if its hot.

Red Wing is the only place I have stayed. Been going there for 4 years now. Have enjoyed it each time. Docks are sheltered. Easy access to electricity. Relatively affordable. They mark up your map for any hazards to look out for. It is a good option. Puts you close enough to everything to where any run you want to make is not a killer.

I will say, however, I have heard Tamarack is extremely tough to beat.

You always have the option of a houseboat rental, move around midday and fish morning/evening close to where you want to go. By the time you spend money on lodging and gas to run all over the lake it's almost a push to use a houseboat and you aren't spending 2 hours a day running in and out. It will probably be a little more forgiving on dates also since it hasn't become overly popular in the Morson area. I've always enjoyed a 10 minute ride in and sit by the campfire or ontop watching a sunset when you see everyone else hauling hinder to get in before its completely dark.

You really like to Troll, don't you Mike
Maybe 2-300hp on a 24ft. pontoon. That way you could fish with a dozen people and have a Hellofa dance platform at Beer Thirty .

I'd go !

MuskieFirst held a couple outings out of Sabaskong Bay lodge back in the early 2000's. Muskie and pike were caught just fishing off the island and docks. If I can find it I'll post a copy of the hydrographic map where pins were placed at caught-fish locations. m
