When the water starts getting rough on LSC it seems like North/middle channels or the Detroit River make better options, providing some shelter from the waves. Most DNR data from master angler submissions or data from the lunge log suggest LSC and the Detroit River to be better options than the St Clair River.

I am just getting started exploring muskie fishing and LSC and am wondering if many guys have luck in the areas in the channels around Dickinson and Harsens Islands? It seems like the data (assuming you count the channels as part of the St Clair River and not LSC) supports these areas being a distant second to the Detroit river.

You have to be careful on both rivers. If you have strong winds blowing directly against the current you could easily have 5ft waves. Been in them. It might not be the whole river either just an area the wind can really get influence. It is an oh #*#* moment if it happens between you and the ramp.

The biggest issue is water turbidity, which the Ontario side of St. Clair and eventually the Detroit River fall prey too. Each direction of wind does something different to it, in which duration and intensity of the wind matters a heck of a lot. The lake is shallow and that is why this is an issue, usually in March and April and the October thru December. To make matters worse, water is most dense at 39 degrees and that usually keeps the silt particles suspended longer keeping it dirty. It's 38-39 right now.The St. Clair River and channels are good too in fall, although most don't go up there. It certainly will remain clean under most conditions, but I've seen that chocolate mud too if Huron gets beat up.

If it is an east wind you can launch at Deckers landing at the mouth of the north channel. Fish out around Grassy island (west side opposite the channel and on the channel side are good) and you can follow the east shore down and fish the middle channel mouth. These areas are good and provide shelter in an east/NE/SE wind that makes much of the lake nasty. In a south or SW wind fish the south shore, you can launch in the upper DR and do the river mouths on the Canadian shore (Pike, Puce, ect), or launch further into Canada and do the Thames mouth. In a strong west wind you can fish Harrison township or selfrige. Just look at the wind direction and take your pick. Look at the satellite image for the water clarity you like, I don't do good in mud here, except at the Thames. In the fall you have a chance at a biggie in any of those spots and many more.

Even in a strong North wind you can fish Brandenburg or New Haven on the North shore, the main lake is pretty much always in play bc theres good areas all around it. Have fun and be safe

Makes sense, fish and launch where the wind is coming from. I wasn't even aware of Deckers, I gave it and the channels a shot yesterday with little luck. Had trouble locating bait fish and only ended up with a follow. Better luck next time...
