Still remember the news reports.

Tonight at the museum at Whitefish Point, they will have rung the Fitz's bell. Every year since it was recovered they ring the bell one time, on the night of the anniversary of its sinking. The museum honors all those who sail the lakes and the over 200 ships that sank in the waters off the point. If you are in the East end of the U.P. some summer it is worth driving up to Whitefish Point and visiting the museum and its grounds. The stories of the rescue service that was headquartered there and what they did in their man powered boats to save sailors is almost beyond comprehension.
I lived across the street from Lake Superior in Marquette for about 18 months. Nothing between the house we rented and Canada except a strip of sand, brush, and a city street and 80 miles of water. Cured me of a long held desire to live on the big lake. We had one storm that rivaled the one that sank the Fitzgerald. The wind sounded like nothing I ever heard before or since.

I was twelve and remember the news. The reality and power of ma nature didn't sink in till I was older. Now it still just plain.......blows me away. Still love Gordon Lightfoot's artistic rendition of the tragedy. I'd love to visit the museum someday.

I’m working on the boats now. Sailed through Lake St Claire today. I barely got to fish this season.

I've been up the Whitefish Point a couple of times now and nothing made this more real for me other than standing next to the ship's bell.
