I have a 8'6" Heavy as an all around rod. I put a Daiwa 400 Lexa 400HS on it. My first real musky rod.

I ended up turning the "screw brake" (magnetic) off.

I can cast a "Top Raider" a mile, no problems, when it comes to the double 10's, I get about half the distance. Seems to me, I should be able to cast them just as far, or more.

What am I doing wrong? Do I just need to rip it harder?

Thanks,

Jared

big bucktails drag way more than a top raider (or other solid-body baits). with about the same initial momentum, the top raider will fly way further. we all share your problem.

Yea if you can get 2/3rd to 3/4th the distance of a double 10 than what you get with a top raider your doing pretty good. You're casting a torpedo compared to a bird with it's wings flapping. You can switch to a marabou skirt....they actually do cast pretty good compared to tinsel.

Throwing double 10's for days on end, switched to a topraider, casted without thinking. It's probably still there, about 50 ft up a tree where I last saw it...

Busted a few baits on rocks that way too.

I don't think it's a problem with your gear.

This is normal. Go from a WTD to a Dub 10 and really feel the brakes.

Thanks for the info guys.

I guess I just figured that a dbl10 is heavier and I should be able to cast it farther. I didn't really consider the air drag on the bait.

Thanks again!

Some dbl 10s are heavier and can be casted much farther than their lighter counterparts

Marabou definatly cast better than tinsil. Better than hair too. Just practice with it. I'm able to cast a #6 dcg (baby I believe) better than I can cast a fat bastard. But I use the dcg 99% of the time and I've just got really good with casting it. It's just something to get used to.

very good point on the weight of double 10s... a light bodied glitter tail will cast much less than say a dadson bullet... thick blades cast the farthest... a topraider tho will always fly farther than a bucktail tho...

Even smaller solid body lures will go much easier than double 10s. I had been casting double 8 blades before I used the Nite Walker from Suick the first time. Whew! Good thing I was paying attention or that brand new lure would have ended up in brush about 20 feet back. It is small and not very heavy but casts like a bullet.

You're not casting hard enough.
