Posts: 65 Location: Springfield, IL and Vermilion Bay, ON | Does anyone have any recent information on the condition of this road? Headed up on Monday and have heard some reports that would suggest avoiding it this summer. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | It's not that bad. A stretch of culverts are ripped up, just slow down and go over them gently and you'll be fine. This was 3 weeks ago, so it may have changed.

Posts: 8 | I just pulled into Dryden (Wabigoon) tonight. There is some work going on resurfacing and looks like culvert work done was through Jul 8 and 17th encountered only minor stops . The hwy between Dryden and Vermillian bay a mess if headed that way.

Posts: 161 Location: Chicago, IL | 502 is fine. There's a less traveled route to Vermillion Bay from 502. I think it is 564. Took it two weeks ago. Was in fine shape. Saved time and you avoid Dryden and the Trans Canadian Hwy.

Posts: 50 | I think it's actually 594. We actually take Ojibway Dr along the north shore that eventually runs into 594. But we stay in Waldoff Bay so we don't need to get on the highway. Ojibway Dr. is about 10 miles before 594. There are signs there indicating Temple Bay and North Shore Lodge. 1 week to go before I'm on my way to Eagle!

Posts: 7010 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Go slow on 502 when you see the bump signs....or end up at Canadian Tire. However, they're nice people who had us out in 30 minutes and only charged $28 to fix my previously flat tire.

Some are fine, but once you settle in that they aren't so bad you drill a bad one.

Posts: 97 Location: Tulsa, OK | Just got back last week, they were in the process of re-finishing about a 20-30 mile stretch. Had several delays coming home, but I would imagine they are pretty close to finishing that up by now.

Posts: 50 | I came back on Sunday. There is a couple mile stretch that is gravel. There is also a few bumpy areas. Slow down on the bumps. I few of them are nasty and we heard of multiple flat tires from others.

Posts: 89 | would you advise 71 instead of 502 to vermilion bay? 502 sucked 3 weeks ago and we had 2 flats because of the road rock gravel.

Posts: 97 Location: Tulsa, OK | It is only a 20-30 mile stretch, if you slow down for the bumps, and while on the gravel you should be ok. Seems that would be a long way around to avoid a small stretch of bad roadway.

Posts: 607 Location: Bloomington, MN | According to Google maps, which could be wrong, taking 71 to Vermillion Bay is 31 miles further, but only 13 minutes longer. 71 is much more scenic of a drive.

Posts: 58 | I came up 502 last night. Its not a problem at all. Maybe a 3-4 mile combined stretch of gravel roads. Bump sections were not nearly as bad as they were in early july. All good.

Posts: 8721 | It wasn't bad on the way up, just a few small areas and a few good bumps. On the way home was another story. Several sections torn up, flaggers out, down to 1 lane in a few places. We sat in one spot for a good half hour. My guess is that it's only maybe 15 miles total that's unpaved, but they were tearing up more as we went through last Saturday. Might be better in a few days, but we were about 5 miles behind the guy who waters the gravel. Brought a lot of it home.

Posts: 89 | Just came back on 502 Monday and it is complete and overall good. The new stretch is great and hopefully they take care of the stretch that is getting potholes in it next year.
