Anyone use the 400AHG for dbl 8's single 8's?
How do you like it?

Had mine a month, so far I like it. Burning 8's is no problem, they come in easily. Mag 9 blades pull, but are manageable. They knob on the power handle took some time getting used to, but is a non-issue now. Overall I like it.

Great Reel! I used mine for burning Double 8's on St. Clair for a whole day and it was fine.

Thanks for the replies.
I forgot to mention I'll be putting the double paddle handle on it ( do not like power handles ).
Should it still be okay for 8's and smaller with the double paddle handle?

I suspect you will feel a lot more resistance with the paddle handle than you would with the Power Handle. I would suggest you take a few casts with the Double 8 while having the power handle on and then put in the paddle handle and do the same. You'll be amazed how much "easier" it is to reel in with the power handle, but if you are ok with the resistance had with the doube paddle handle, then you'll be ok.

I hated the power handle, but now I wouldn't fish without it! Give it some time, it really is the key to the reel on the dbl 8's. I have that handle on the low speed 400 for 10's, and I have no issues. I do not own a 500 Tranx, but have spent too many years with the Saltist 30/40's and even that heavy gold Shimano with no level-wind (senility is setting in). Now trolling reels. I still can't deal with the palming grip reel seat on the newer St. Croix's despite massive electrical tape build up!

They are good. Like both PG and HG. PG is a good 'all around reel'. HG is a real burner... great with 8's

i'll trade you a paddle handle for a power handle. The handle I have, has never been used.

I think I'm gonna stick to my Okuma Komodo's for smaller bucktails.
