Posts: 6 | Wondering if anyone is using a 400 tranx with the 5.8:1 gear ratio for throwing double 10s. I have a 400hga, on a sling blade, and it doesn't do well with big blades, but if I go with the 400 (5.8) and put the power handle from the hg on it, would it work for big blades?

Posts: 211 Location: Wisconsin | Yes that is what i throw blades with. 5:8 with the power handle is great. Your not going to burn them in but it does a very nice job with them. Casts really well and is very smooth.

If you want a dedicated 10 reel get the big brother. I also throw big top water lures with the 500 along with rubber and cranks

Posts: 1677 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | I disagree with Dave on the 400 5.8 and the power handle. 10's are easier on the 400 with the power handle than my 500 PG's. I have 4 400's and 4 500PG's and 1 HG. I have considered selling PG's to get more 400's after my experience with them this year.

Posts: 668 Location: mercer wi | I guess it was more work for me because I had to grip the reel tighter because it's a small reel. I have big hands. So the bigger reel didn't stress my hand. Another thing is with the older style reel seat I had to grip harder because it felt like reel was getting away from me if that makes sense. I have switched back to the paling seat and there's less torque on my hand because the pull is is into your whole hand not just the fingers and wrist. If thatakes sense

Posts: 1000 | i've been running the 400A for 5-9 hours at a shot with 10's. Paddle handle. I like it, but I'm 28. We'll see how it holds up long term. My complaint with the 500PG was that it didn't have enough resistance.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I used my 400 5.8 Tranx this weekend. The reel is nice but I'll need a power handle before I like it for blades. Even double 8s at a fair speed was more resistance than I liked. Doable, but I've gotten used to power handles and much prefer them for anything that has some drag. I'm going to try a power handle from an Abu NACL amd see how I like that. Tucker

Posts: 211 Location: Wisconsin | The power handle on the 400pg makes a huge difference. I mostly throw 9's and smaller with mine and absolutely love the reel. I have thrown cowgirls multiple times with it and in my opinion it brings in the blades with the same resistence as the 500pg due to the longer power handle on the 400.

They may work for one "day", but they don't have what it takes to make it all season.

Talked to the guy that works on my reels as his comment was that the lexas should NOT be used for 10s as the metal within the reel is too soft and WILL bend. Somehow, that's not good.

Posts: 239 Location: Madison, WI | My 400HG has lasted through lots of hrs of throwing blades up to 12's, from slow rolling up to burning at all sizes... Personally, i would never use the low speed for blades as the high speed has more than enough power. Has been my main reel all season and isnt showing any issues... quite happy with it and have only broken out my 500 HG once this season
