I just sold my Trinadad and downsized my musky rod to a 7'6" jerkbait rod. Now I am looking for a replacement reel. Looking at the Tranx series but I don't quite know what size. I will throw mostly jerkbaits with this combo but also blades and crankbaits. I'll use this as a casting rod/reel combo. The 300 definitely looks too small. 400 or 500 series looks best. Is the 500 series too big to work jerkbaits. If not should I consider PG or HG? Will I be able to work bigger baits with the 400? I'm a bit confused.

The 500 is a beast of a reel brother. I love mine but if you are looking to just throw jerks and mid/large cranks the 400 should be plenty. Now if you are wanting to burn 10's then I'd say 500 all the way. PG or HG - makes little difference to me. Some people like the ease of the PG but I have no problems with the HG's power and boy is it fast. The 400 will most definitely pull smaller bucktails no prob. IMO a 400 would go great with a 7'6 rod. Not too heavy but not underpowered either.

I've been running the Okuma Komodo 463 with the double handle.
Continues to be a nice all-arounder but really shines with diveNrise baits large & small.
Much less of a tank in-hand compared to the Lexa 400 and I find myself using the reel more than the rod for taps, pops, and scurrying.
My 7'6" is collecting dust now.

I use the smaller Komodo 364 I think they call it. They are a dream to use.

Toro NaCl syncs up nice for me with my natural rhythm. Each twitch lines up with a half-crank of the reel. It's perfect and it's left-handed. TranX is overkill. I also like my Lexa 300HSL for size, but the ratio is a little too high for me. Nice reel for really working them fast.

Since he was asking about shimano, the 400 is a awesome all around reel. I prefer the 5 gear for jerk baits. But the hg is awesome aswell. For pure pull power you can't get any better then the 500

I'd agree the 500 is a bit much for regular sized jerbaits...I do use the 500 for barfighters/navins etc...but for regular 8 to 11 inch sizes I'd go with something in the 400 size....5.1 to 5.4 to me is ideal. I use a Revo Toro 5.4 to 1 for my jerks/gliders.

The Tranx 400 HG is what you want. I recently tested my Tranx 400 HG alongside my Tranx 500 HG (stock handle) and Tranx 500 HG (LJV Handle) to guage what I liked for each technigue. The 400 fit well in my hand, balanced well with a shorter rods (7' and 8'), and takes up slack quickly during the pause with a jerkbait. The 400 also fishes plastics well and pulls in Double 10's better than the 500 HG (with stock handle). The only thing I liked the 500 HG (with LJV handle) for over the 400 HG was Double 10'a and casting 2 Pounders.

My one cent.....I run a Diawa lexa 300 hd 8:1 or 7:1 with an 8' Elk River. I like the high speed reel to easily pick up line working jerks. It also works great for prop top waters and walk the dog.

I run 3 400TE's and have been very happy with the performance.

Some time it would be great to do a comparison against some other reels mentioned here but I'm very happy so far...

I have the Shimano Calcutta TE 400 LJV and from my short time casting different lures on the water, I prefer the Tranx 400 HG over the Calcutta except for throwing Musky sized A-Rigs. That long handle and lower retrieve of the Calcutta 400 LJV really shines when bringing in something that has all that hydroresistance, such as a large A-Rig.

For jerk baits I have a sling blade matched with the 401aHG, I switched to the paddle handle for jerks, which made it easier to pick up line. The rod is tip heavy so it doesn't take alot of effort to work the bait. It's awesome for cranks as well, because I can throw anything from an F18 to magmun shallow Dawgs. Since I'm mostly picking up slack line after jerks the HG is perfect. I'm a short guy, so the long rod helps me make big 8s or ovals and still keep that walk the dog action on some baits. I personally don't like throwing blades bigger than reg 8s unless they are deep cupped or fluted, but that might be because of not having the stock handle on my it and I have a big nasty with 500 tranx to burn the big girls.
Hope my 2 cents helps.
