We run 100lb braid on our trolling setup. We were trying to troll a headlock off a board and the off shore board with the black lock kept slipping and the board would get pushed back to the leader. What size mono should we try?

40lb mono would be fine. You can always double wrap the braid, i have to do that with any clip i have tried including that locking clip, church locking clip too.

^^^^ Exactly, if you troll big baits on boards with braid, you'll be best served by double wrapping the clip.

The setup I learned from a top notch MN guide is 100lb braid, TX-44 board, Lockjaw clip on the front, upgraded metal pin, heavy duty snap swivel, OR-19 clip, and double wrap. Put the pin through the swivel and attach the OR-19 clip via the snap so you have both ends clipped instead of one that slides along the pin which will create frays in braid or snap mono.

Tyler that is great information. I upgraded to metal pins but i do like that idea.

Thank Kevin Cochran, not me. I've fished with him a few times and sat in on an Advanced Trolling seminar he did...it was some second level stuff.

I did as Tyler suggested. I have the Lockjaw release, bought some OR19 heavy duty release clips(these replaced the pins) attached a eye bolt on the back of the board that lined up with the pin location and split ringed the OR 19 to the eye bolt.

I also put a dab of marine silicone on the nut on the bottom of the Lockjaw release to prevent fraying on the line as it is double wrapped on the Lockjaw release.

I do not have any pictures but both of my boards worked well for about 2 hours total time in the water- I had other big motor issues that weekend so no more trolling time.

I got these tips from Brett Erickson and also Kevin Cochran does a mod very similar.

Good Luck

Steve

Youtube search Super natural Big Baits. There is a 3 part series on the headlocks they did. I'm not even troller, but found out some really cool things watching the 3 videos. Duff, Brett Erickson, and Matt Seifert do a nice job getting in-depth on the bait, trolling, and specifically the question you asked about planer boards. Good luck.

Why is it that I have never had a problem with my 100lb cortland slipping with the stock clip on the TX44? Works fine for me without double wrapping even. I just strap it on and it stays put even trolling 5mph with a decent chop.

You are lucky. Mine slipped right away, muskies and salmon.

TX44's with lockjaws with 100 lb cortland has worked for me and I do not double wrap. The only time it has slipped has been when my tension bolt on the lockjaw was too loose. Keep a screw driver in the boat to tighten just in case it loosens up. You can always double wrap if need be but it makes me nervous about getting the board off with a fish on and fraying line.

I replaced the bolt that attaches the lockjaw to the arm on the board with a longer one and put two lock washers on it. I lost a board at night because one of the stock ones loosened up and fell off. That was an offshore board but I did that to all my boards after that.

Wanna know how to pull big baits on boards. Get rid of the plastic pins on the rear of church boards and get metal. Spin the board when running line through the pin and put line in the clip. No more movement.
