Posts: 4 | Hey guys first post! So my family has a cabin on lake pokegama we've had it since the early 1900s and I've been fishing here for forever. Problem is I've never caught a musky ever and only have caught a 28 inch northern I fish over weedbeds and off sharp drops and rock croppings What am I doing wrong are the fish just not big anymore? (Dad and uncle both have caught huge muskys 42-48 inch ones) I'd just like to catch something bigger? then 30 inches P.s. I suck at fishing deep. Any tips? I've seen guys use huge luers and jig with them? Is that an actual tactic?

Location: Contrarian Island | the LDF chain in notoriously low density. That being said there are probably more fish in Pokeg and Flambeau than the other lakes. Have you fished at night? good bodies of water for night fishing, fish in low light/cloudy days as well. Not easy lakes for sure but if you put in time there are some big ones in there.. might be worth hiring Doug Smith who you can get in touch with at Rollie and Helens. He knows those lakes very well and is putting big fish in the boat for clients year round. Edited by BNelson 6/23/2017 1:33 PM

Posts: 4 | BNelson - 6/23/2017 1:24 PM the LDF chain in notoriously low density. Do you mean fish population? What happened to make it low? My father blames the introduction of bass (he doesn't fish her anymore he goes to Alaska) And we do do night fishing...... The mosquitos are just so bad.

Location: Contrarian Island | yes, low density and is not many fish per acre in the chain. it is not stocked, so it's all natural, there are still good muskies in there, I know some guys who get some.. night fishing is one way to up your odds. usually the mosquitos are bad at sunset, but 30 minutes later if you go out they aren't bad...

Posts: 409 Location: Almond, WI | Nothing needs to happen to make the population low...less fertile waters have less fish, the LDF chain is very deep and clear, with a sandy/rocky substrate which is lower in nutrient. That type of lake generally supports less fish, but a higher average size, which the LDF chain has always had the reputation for. Non-stocked lakes also have a lower density in most cases. Also natural reproduction is negatively impacted by lakeshore development. An actual tip: one of my dad's friends (may he rest in peace) caught several big fish from the chain. He liked to work Bulldawgs parallel to breaklines, sometimes counting them down a bit.

Posts: 4 | Ok I'll try that I have one in my box.... Should I try the weed edge where it drops from 7 ish feet to 18 feet?

Location: Contrarian Island | hire Doug Smith a full day and pick his brain, have him show you Pokeg and how he fishes it... the investment will pay off for years to come!

I'm thinking that chain sees lots and lots of spears...

Posts: 3240 Location: Racine, Wi | x4 on Doug. If I was going to be up there any time soon, I'd be happy to take you out and show you around, but alas, just quick weekend trips up there this year. As mentioned, it's low density water. There are some days where you would swear there aren't any fish in there. Then one day, you're reminded why you do fish there.
