I'm getting into trolling this year and I got a TDR for my smaller lures like perch baits, small jakes, small believers and other small cranks. What rod and line do you guys recommend for giant hard pulling baits like plows, giant jakes, deep threats, etc. Thanks!

Pick up the extra heavy Mojo Cat rod from St.Croix, I believe its the 8-32 oz model.

Thanks for the rod recommendation. I figured a tuff cat rod would be the way to go. Do you use braid or mono with these hard pulling lures? I have 30lb mono on my TDR setup but I'm not sure if I should bump it up a little for the large baits.

A bit more expensive but the CTS baycaster blanks are worth it!

7 ft Ugly Stik Tigers and 10 ft Ugly stik Heavy's, both these rods will handle whatever you throw at them. 30 or 40 lb mono or 80 or 100lb PP

The Heavy TDR will handle the big stuff. I've run 16" Custom X on that thing and that bait pulls plenty hard. The TDR is a soft rod, which does well with the big cranks IMO. (Also Planar Boards) However, if you want to run some serious torque, like trolling 13s at 5MPH+, then your best bet, IMO, is the to go with the St. Croix E-Glass blank. Thorne Brothers make a custom trolling rod off this blank with 6" off the tip for musky guys . It is fantastic. It also doubles as a wonderful live bait rod.

My $0.02.

Thanks everybody, I think I'll try some larger lures on the TDR I have and if it works out good I'll just get another one. I'd love to get a croix or Thorne for trolling but it's not worth the money for me because I'm probaly only going to troll 3-4 times a year if I'm lucky
