Friend at work came across this image while working on a photo collection. You'll have to forgive her the vertical hold, it must not have been considered lady like to actually touch them. It was caught out of a canoe, which would have been a blast I'm sure. It's an Ottawa river fish but that's all I'll say as I'm sure she wouldn't want the exact location mentioned, even now after 100 years has passed. She was a Muskie hunter afterall.

You'd think Miss Ireland would have been quite the catch herself back in 1899....

What do you think? 50? LOL

Hats off to Miss Ireland. She even too her hat off for the picture, as shown on the ground.

Will be looking to hear what the experts say about the size.

A definite GIANT!! Obviously recently spawned out. I'd "estimate" it to be in the high 50 inch length range and in the 45 to 50 pound weight range.

69 pounds?

Nice fish.

It's cool that there were people who were proud of the catch such a short (long) time ago.

This photo is historic.

Two things, i did hit that.

Nice job falling off the muskellunge challenge, BigC or should we call you BigD?:-)

Her feet dissapeared into the ground, must be a pre 1950 thing.

Thats three things, ok i am an idiot.

Her feet don't disappear Todd she's literally floating on air after catching a 50+, you know the feeling....err wait.

Maybe BigD is more appropriate

These are really cool pics.

Jake i don't know what the hot reel was but st croix introduced the metal long shot, the first 5' musky rod and all metal. The topwater craze was over a bait called the overweight fatherless child. A bold and controversial name for the time. People lined up for city blocks just to look at it in a store window.

Overweight fatherless child. That one really made me chuckle Todd.

Great picture - thanks for posting.

When I look at her cinched waist and the size of gents hat that he set on the ground to take the picture, I'd conclude the pretty lady is tiny by today's standards... guess about 5' - 100lbs (you have to start somewhere)..

The fishes size (from camera perspective) is pretty skewed with the ground sloping away and the muskie hanging well out in front of her. These contributing factors obviously also help to make the muskie appear larger than it really is.

However, even with perspective; IMHO the fish is still not nearly as long as she is tall, and her smallish waist is still noticeably larger than the fishes girth.

Obviously a lot of guesswork; my guess is 54" + -- 2" and about 35 pounds + -- 3-4 lbs.

A 5' tall 100lb person isn't going to hold a 40lber at arms length like that. But maybe that's why she isn't smiling. Guy behind the camera is yelling at her to hold it out farther so it looks bigger and the camera takes 20 minutes to snap a picture....lol

I agree she could not reasonably holding it that far out without straining, and it's way out there too based on fishes shadow.

Although it first appeared to me that the fish was suspended from the wire, now that I look at it more closely the wire is not bending down from the weight either. Weird !

Looks like her left arm may be helping with the weight by holding under her right arm. Those big puffy sleeves make it hard to tell though.

Oh Boy,
Here we go. She's got to be 5'8"....according to the angle of the shadows and shades of the pic.
Thus my deduction is that this "Musky" is 53.474 inches long.

Hmmmmmm, Looks like a real trophy muskie. As Paul Harvey said: "and there's the rest of the story!" Yeah, she's a brawny Irish wench!" Because of my Irish and Viking ancestors I was looking at her top part(s), then I noticed the cable and her gentle hold. The answer was obvious, e.g., Louie was hidden behind her & helping hold the fish up! Mystery solved!

She's thinking: "This would be good, cooked by someone else!"

Have fun!
Al
