Posts: 410 Location: With my son on the water | I fished the last 5 evenings and watched the water temperature drop from 81 on Sunday to 72 tonight. I never moved a fish which is very rare for me this time of year. I fished bars, and points up to slop, the normal stuff that usually works. I did see the bait fish up tight but never moved a fish? So what gives? Did they boil to death this summer?

Posts: 63 | Probably due to the high cold front that has moved in over the last couple of days.Once it has been in place for a few days things should pick up as the fish adjust.Sometimes those Bluebird days just shut the action down for a spell. Good time to sharpen the hooks for a day or two and get ready for the fall feeding frenzy.

Posts: 255 | my guess is they will turn on tomorrow morning, because that is when I need them to turn on. Probably have 3 or more by 8:30. Or none as usual, but we'll find out.

Posts: 221 | Have you tried fishing in the slop? I was out last night and raised two in about 8 feet over really thick cabbage right before dark.

Posts: 253 Location: On the water | They talk about fishing the slop. What are some of the baits they use?? I know spinnerbaits and top water but what are some of the baits people don't think about using? Thanks, Tom

Bingo! ... we have a winner Its funny how back asswards lake st clair is from these lakes out west I read about on here. Right now its an offshore mid lake bite. Its all about finding schools of shad out in the open expanses. There no doubt some fish to be had in tight weedy areas too but the bulk of the serious musky fishing is offshore mid to late summer. Soon they will come back in close though.

Posts: 7 | Caught a 39" casting into a school of Sunnys in 20 fow a few days ago and got a 47" last night in 5 fow in the slop and moving fish on sand and weed lines, points points points, islands and inside turns. Water temps was 74-76 on metro last night 3-6 fow but their definitely moving shallow.

Posts: 39 | Fished last night and this morning in Minocqua area. Didn't raise any. Water temps were 67 deg this AM. Should I be throwing slower moving stuff or keep trying bucktails?

Location: MN | Depends on the strain of fish you're targeting. I wouldn't be in the slop if targeting leechers.

Posts: 2005 | Get dirty and dig them out!!! I have had more luck with Leechers in the slop than anywhere else. Nothing giant (46, 44, and 42), but some giants have been seen in less than 5 fow and some very thick weeds. 1 over 55 too... It's only 3 fish, but considering I've only caught 6 casting, I'd say its a disproportionate representation for the time spent actually fishing the slop- 2 weeks a year for 4 years...

Location: MN | AR, maybe our definitions of slop are different. I consider slop weeds so thick they are difficult to fish. I agree on shallow. Since the cool down we've caught fish on rocks, sand and weeds. No reeds/bullrushes to fish where we were otherwise I'd be hitting those too. I start with slop in extreme cold fronts and will fish it when nothing else is working. Haven't had the need to go to them recently. I suppose each piece of water is different. These first cool downs are my favorite time to fish.

Posts: 1828 | I struggled in Canada last week until I started trolling. Either the fish weren't up shallow or just wouldn't chase what I was throwing. Started trolling and there they were. Back home yesterday afternoon the fish were right where they should be - edge of thick weeds and within sparser weeds. And they were chasing, and a few were eating. But that was with good fishing weather, as opposed to the less desirable conditions I had in Canada.

Location: Contrarian Island | Leechers go shallow just like other strains...it is my belief there are always fish shallow, just like there are always a % of the fish deep, and in between...all depths basically... just need to find the ones that are active...from my experience, when you do find fish shallow/in slop..and put a bait near em...they hit it.. Posts: 32800 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | What BN said, and spots love shallow water. The reason we fish the shallows more than most is because we fish the shallows more than most. The fish are there, and very few folks fish them hard. While we are fishing the shallow elements on a piece of structure, it isn't uncommon to have a half dozen boats fish through on the deeper break.

Location: MN | How would you guys define slop? Maybe my definition is off. I definitely agree on shallow this time of year...very shallow. Got one this weekend in shallow weeds just out from the slop.

Location: Contrarian Island | my definition of slop is the stuff that you basically can't get a bait thru.. or 99.9% of your casts anyway.. the fish are in that....most guys don't think they are, or realize how many fish are in there imo... it is just simply hard to effectively fish... shallow weeds that you can get baits over/thru is not 'slop' to me... I'm sure we all have different definitions but leech lake, Wi strain etc all use that shallow slop at times ...sometimes more than others...

Location: MN | Okay sounds like we are on the same page as for our definition of slop. Based on the posts in this thread some others are not. I just thought I'd help the OP avoid pulling weeds off a spinner bait all day in the conditions he described. I have no doubt some are in the slop but IMO you should not need to deal with them in these conditions and that has been my experience this year and previous years at this time. Extreme cold fronts are a different story.
