| I have been told that the DNR can tell a lot about a fish from one of its scales. Age, dna of a specific individual, etc. I have a scale from a nice fish that my daughter caught, and would like to send it somewhere and get some info on it. Anybody know where I could go? |

Location: Yahara River Chain | Age is a little tricky to judge from scales due to the edges of the scales getting worn off thus missing some of the "rings". And from what I understand the DNA needs to come from the slime not a dry scale. |

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Scales aren't accurate for aging, they can be replaced throughout the life of the fish, someone could come up with an age of 5 when the fish is really 10. More accurate is from a dorsal spine and most accurate is from cleithra (which requires a dead fish). DNA could be extracted but if the population is stocked the DNA is already known and likely known if it's a natural population. |
