A couple friends and I are planning a trip to northern Minnesota, preferably in the Ely area. One of the guys is in his 80s and can't handle heavy gear, so we'd like to find a good multi-species lake (walleye, pike, bass, crappies). A chance at muskies would be a big plus of course. Any resorts that come to mind?

In the Ely area on the northwest side of lake Shagawa is a little resort called Lady Bug Lodge. It's not super fancy, but it's really nice and reasonably priced to stay there. Shagawa has a good population of smallies, is better known as a walleye lake, and there are plenty of northerns that get pretty big. Vermillion is only about 25 minutes back west if you want a real shot at a muskie. I've heard there are some in Shagawa, but have never seen one personally. There are also panfish present. Also, across the road on the south side of Shagawa, right on the north edge of town, there is a pit lake that has rainbows for sure and maybe splake if I remember right. I lived with n Ely and love to go back and visit, it's a beautiful place for sure!!

Glenwood lodge is over half way to Ely on the eastern side of vermillion. You can fish the north side of pine and not worry about wind. You have all the species you seek and it's like fishing a smaller lake.

Majority of Ely Lakes are loaded with bass, only Shagawa and Birch have Muskies and few and far between on both.

Bear Island, Snowbank, and Little Long were good for multi species.

Always better to get into from you guys than to try to sort through websites - everything looks great on those pages.
Thanks to everyone.

I stayed at Glenwood last fall... It's a roof over your head, not much more...and it's about 7 or 8 miles off the main road which isn't a big deal unless you need to head into town for something then you're looking at a minimum of a 1/2 hour round trip back to Tower.

What? Your roof over your head comment is way off base. I have stayed at alot of resorts and those cabins are as good as they come! It is 8 miles off the hwy but it is half way to Ely as well. It is the closest resort to the Ely area that offers everything he is looking for.

Just relaying my experience. Maybe you had a newer or more modern cabin than us. The ceiling tiles were falling down, the window in the kitchen wouldn't close, water heater/shower was spraying water at the toilet, the paneling next to the stove/oven was burnt or had been severely over heated... I can't say what the other cabins are like, but this is what mine was like...

Just curious which Cabin was it? Stayed in a few of them. Many are cedar sided inside and out and pretty modern.

It was the one closest to the docks on the little hill left of the ramp as you look at the lake. Not sure the number of the cabin off hand, but I could look on their site and find it...

Ok, I know the one. Interesting. I stayed in it once and it was ok that 8 or 9 years ago. Much of the time it is rented long term by an elderly gentleman who fishes alone for walleye and bass. I think that is the oldest cabin.

My partner decided on Glenwood. (I bring the boat and gear, he gets the cabin.) Settled on the east end of Vermilion since the walleye bite there is better than anything we looked at in the Ely area. No idea of which cabin we'll have, but it should be fine. (At least I hope it's fine.). Again, thanks to all.

I stayed at Glenwood in mid summer 2 years ago. I'd echo Todd's comments. We had a good time, and the location is awesome. I saw a couple nice muskies on the reefs in big bay like 2 miles from the resort. Found some walleyes in the narrow stretches the other way from camp. You really can't beat the location, and I enjoyed that it was in the middle of nowhere.

Alot of good pike and smallouth too. Rice Bay and the elbow Bay on the north side of pine are great pike spots. A few musky, muskie, ski as well. You catch a largemouth it will be really nice. Plenty of rocks around for the bronzebacks. I picked this resort because I wanted to fish vermillion and I took my kids and grandfather and it gave us alot of options based on wind.

You're killing me, Todd. How am I supposed to wait five and a half weeks? Last year we hit Vermilion just as the May flies were hatching and we had some nasty winds. During that time we fished a couple days for smallies close to shore and pencil reeds. A fantastic way to spend time until we could drift with Lindy Rigs.

Hoping to get those walleye guys to give me some time to hunt muskies a bit too, to help me survive until I get to Spring Bay in September.
