Posts: 1169 Location: New Hope MN | My nephew is coming with us to lake of the woods this summer for the first time and wants to try musky hunting. He's 10. Does anyone have a recommendation for a heavy duty bass setup capable of tossing small musky baits? He wants a bait caster.

Posts: 32800 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Look at the kid's 6' muskie rods TI offers. My grandkids do very well with them with bass sized reels and 50# super line. Can throw about any mid sized muskie lure and do well in a battle with a big fish. great quality, great price, and a good fit for a young person.

Posts: 56 Location: Illinois | Agreed, my son has been using the TI 6' for a few years with a Zebco omega reel on it. He Loves to fish with it, casts everything with that setup.

Posts: 143 Location: Palatine, IL | I just got the TI rod for my kids. It's perfect for them. I had a Chronarch 200e laying around, so that's the reel I put on. Great setup!

my kid started (at 10) on a TI Kids rod. had a winch 50 and later a nacl50 hs. The hs reels are great for the smaller, lighter lures as they can put speed on them and keeps them interested longer which will result in more action. Also, the 50 size reels are good to transfer to bigger rods when they move out of the 6' size. when they are not with you, you can put it on one of your rods and use it. And yes, like Steve said, the TI rods can take big fish. he had a 38- 40# class fish on it and it handled it beautifully. I was very impressed with the rod. Especially for the money.

Posts: 427 | It would be probably around 100 or a little more but you can find a good deal on a new quantum exo300 right now on ebay. I have one and like it for small stuff. It is more of a bass sized reel with muskie durability.

Posts: 1209 | If I were bringing a competent 10 year old I would hand them a st. Croix 7'9" mojo bass swimbait rod and a abugarcia revo beast , revo inshore or revo winch all bass sized. The true bass rod for is smaller around at the handle, plenty stiff with plenty of give super light weight too. 50-65# line
