New to the forums here so would first like to say hello. My son and i were out for a walk along the river we live by and came across this fish head. Figured i would put it in a ziploc and keep it. Thought the skull might look cool. My question is do you think it is a musky? I'm assuming it is as I don't see many fish this big in the Susquehanna river where i fish and seems too big for a pike. Set my sons iphone 6 next to it for some scale. How should i get it down to just the skull?
Thx in advance.

Here is a process we use for cleaning sea shells taken out of salt water:

1. Soak the specimen in fresh water for 5 days, changing water as needed
2. Dry, and then soak overnight in a solution of 10% bleach and 90% water
3. Place specimen in a pot of water, bring to a boil, boil 10 min, and then remove
4. When dry, treat with mineral oil to preserve color and sheen

This should remove any tissue and permanently eliminate any odor.

Good Luck!

How many pores under the jaw, if you can still see them?

I wouldn't use bleach. I've heard it eats away at the bone. Find an ant hill or call a taxidermist for advice.

Correct. Bleach will eventually eat away at the bone. I used bleach to whiten a deer skull years ago. It is still flaking today.

If it's already dried out, leave it as is. I have one and as long as it stays dry, it won't rot.

There is a junior at my high school who specializes in mounting skeletons of mammals and birds. She mounted a coyote found in the prairie out back and the detail is stunning. The other day she told me she uses time, beetles and lastly hydrogen peroxide to whiten the bones.
