I've always loved musky fishing since I was 11 years old and caught my first musky, but the problem was I only got to do it one week out of the year. I am going to be moving back to my hometown at the end of December, which is about 30 miles south of Chicago and will be getting ready to do a lot more musky fishing in the up coming season then I ever have with my older cousin. Are there any lakes even worth our time in IL? Or do you guys have any suggestions for us? Thank you!

I think Chicago musky folks should just do the same thing Chicago football fans do to see a good game, drive to Green Bay . Maybe best wait till next year? We seem to have contracted the virus!

30 miles south of chicago puts you closer to indiana waters. The fox chain has its times when it is good.

Heidecke can be good for Muskie if you have a boat.

I'm not Todd but I fish Webster quite a bit:
Webster can be challenging, but there are some great fish in it.
It tends to get a lot of pressure for a smaller lake. The nice thing about the area is that if Webster is crowded or not producing there are several other lakes and chains within 30-45 minutes drive that have great Muskie fishing...

yeah in high school a couple years ago i was fishing the annual spring bass tournament and seen some kid land 2 back to back 40+ inch fish out of there. the structure kind of sucks in there but I've never targeted musky in there so i might have to go give it a shot since thats pretty close to me!

Shabbona has a good population. Some nice fish in there but it gets pounded at times and gets tiresome. I personally have about 100 hours in targeting Muskie. Had a couple follows but that's all. Other than the 2-3 bite offs I have when targeting walleye lol.

Maybe the GREAT Muskellunge fishing in Illinois is just an unknown somehow due to the idea that Chad Cain retired, Mike Hulbert guides on different lakes in different states, and most people in Illinois would rather drive somewhere else than give our own lakes a chance.

Anyways...

Throw a dart at a map of Illinois... The closest Muskellunge lake near you might hold a 50 incher. The lake might be less than 200 acres, too. There are some approaching 1,000 as well as an 11,000 acre lake that has hit 20,000 acres during high water. That one is my favorite lake in the state. Reminds me of the Simpsons...

You will be close to Evergreen. I love this lake. You have a great chance at catching a very, very nice Muskellunge from this lake. They like white and the main forage is Shad. SS Shads, Kickin Minnows, 10 inch Jakes, and Weagles are a little more than a few good lures to start with. I like to cast... but, I have been woken up to the sound of a clicker going off behind the sound of a 9.9 tiller.

Illinois Muskellunge fishing kicks ass. The state literally has just about every type of lake or river you can imagine as far as which waters hold Muskellunge. Over 30,000 acres of Muskellunge water to cover... You think it is hard figuring out which spot to fish on a big lake - out of state? It can be equally as tough choosing which lake to fish out of a bunch when you might be facing below freezing temperatures of temperatures we consider far too hot for Muskellunge. Not to mention rain and all that other good stuff. The lakes look like a mess sometimes. Believe it or not... it can seem as if there is not a single fish in some of our lakes at certain times of the year. A lot of them are off limits at certain times of the year also... just like Wisconsin. The great thing is... we usually always have open and available Muskellunge fishing - somewhere.

Good luck to you and your cousin. If you need help... hit me up on here or on Facebook. I'm not afraid...

Sheesh...

Illinois...

One more thing... be on the spots you want to be on when you believe the fish might be moving. There are legitimate portions of the day, week, and even month where you either have a good chance or what might seem like no chance in the end. These lakes work hard and there seems to be good balance in a lot of them when it comes to everything except the outside conditions. Just gotta be quick to change things up at any given moment in order to increase your chances. Now... do not get the wrong idea... You can go out and be chill and accomplish all of this at the same time. It is not as crazy as it may seem.
