Looking at a new depth finder/GPS. Cabelas has some good deals coming up. Should I buy a Hummingbird 1199 for $1299, a 899 for $650 or Lowrance HDS 7 gen 2 for $600. Going on a bass boat at consil. Not really sure best route to go. Leaning more towards Lowrance.

Look very seriously at the Humminbird Helix SI series. I have the 5 and really like it.

Just put some time in with a helix unit and was a big fan as well! Surely can't beat the value at that price!

The Helix is a better unit for the money than these other units? I think I need Side Imaging.

The 1199 for $1200 is a steal. Take it and run.

Helix units have more whiz-bang, but @ $1200...they don't - IMO - do enough more than the 1199 to make up for the cost difference.

When my 1198 dies, I'll replace it with a Helix big screen, but until then, I'll wait it out.

...and yes, you need SI.

The Helix 5 was $499. I'd look at a 7 too. Plenty big enough and a great price.

My last boat ran Humminbirds and I recently bought a new boat with HDS units. I prefer the Lowrance graphs for adjusting imaging and getting the "picture" I wanted when searching for structure, weeds, fish, etc. With that said, I think the Humminbirds are more user friendly and easier to navigate/learn.

I consider this topic of Lowrance VS Humminbird to be similar to the Ford VS Chevy... Play with both at the store and see which you prefer by brand. If you like Humminbird better, I would go with the 899 based on your options listed for the console.

Not mentioned but we are using the new Simrad Go7 and like it way better than the last hummingbird we had on the previous boat. Awesome display, down imaging, so easy to use and all touchscreen like using a tablet.

Another vote for the Helix. I have the five but had I known the 7 was coming out I would have waited. Bigger screens help these old eyes.

I think I will be looking at the big screen Helix and the others to see which one I like. Im currently running a Lowrance LCX17 so any of them will be a major upgrade.

Garmin is coming out with a Striker series. The 7" model has Chirp, Down Vu and Side Imaging and only cost $500. I was about to buy the Helix 7 at Bass Pro but the rep there suggested to wait and said that Garmin people were there the day before introducing their new line up. He said it was made to compete with the Humminbird Helix series. It beats the Helix 7 by $200 and has CHIRP. Amazon has it up now with the specs and pics and price to be pre ordered. I am pretty set on getting it. Has anyone here used Garmin?

Jump on the 99 series birds. They r great units and the clearance prices on them are amazing. I have an 899 and 859 and love them. That price for the 1199 is a no brainer.
