I run a 2012 Opti ProXS 150. What do you guys do when you pull your boats out of the water on a cold day in regards to getting all the water out of the motor so it doesn't freeze up? I was told to trim motor all the way down to let the water drain and also turn the key and dry fire the motor for a few seconds to blow any excess water out. I've never fished much past the first weekend in October but looking to extend my season this year. Thanks.

lower the motor right away to let it drain, start the motor and blow out anything by a couple quick revs ... ez-pz, so you were told correctly.

Watching video on YouTube about Yamaha motors. They say up and down two or three times. Waiting for it to stop each time. Never start the motor. Even a couple seconds at idle will wreck there water pump. That being said I believe they build these motors to drain out. But I start my 1998 efi mariner for 2-3 seconds at idle. Never rev.

Make sure to pull the boat and trailer out slow not to freeze water on the ramp. That could get ugly.

You don't start the motor, generally you would pull the lanyard or flip the run switch so all you are doing is turning it over, not firing it up.

Interesting. 3 different approaches to this so far.

I've always started my Optis for 2-3 seconds, no issues yet

Tilting the outboard down after pulling out of the water will drain the water out, never dry start the outboard it will damage the impeller and or water pump, I know because I did this and had to replace my impeller (not cheap) . I fish until the docks freeze up and tilt my outboard down and let all the water out, take your time and let it all drain. Never had a problem after doing this.

I do what the manual says.

Lower it, raise it all the way up, & and then lower it again. It also says in bold letters NEVER TURN THE MOTOR OVER OUT OF THE WATER as it will damage the pump impeller about five different times through out the manual.

Have a good day.

Recognize that a small amount of water freezing in your outboard is generally NOT an issue. The problem with water freezing is expansion. If water is trapped in an area of the motor where it cannot expand without cracking something, then yes a problem may occur ....stress MAY. But if a bit of water is pooled somewhere and it freezes and has room to expand just slightly....no issue at all.

Trim motor way down, let it drain, trim motor way up, then way down and let it drain some more.

Also...when the first frost is forecast I'll change my lower unit oil with fresh stuff and then when I put it away for the winter I'll change it again. Doing that gave me the heads up that I had a bad seal on a plug that was leaking. Oil was a bit milky. Replaced the plug, new oil, no problems. Would've hated to get hit with a hard freeze with any water in the lower unit. That would not have been fun.

Also make sure livewell and lines are drained. If you have a Terrova/PD type trolling motor check that the shaft is dry so it isn't froze and can be deployed the next morning. If carpet is wet open the compartment doors overnight so they don't freeze shut. I have learned all of these the hard way....
