Location: varies | Its a stocked fish by the DNR. Not a natural born to the lake

Few years back, I got a musky on opening day that had a fin clipped. I knew the DNR had been on our lake chain and set nets right after ice out as part of a survey. The tech working the lakes had encouraged everyone to let them know if we got a musky with a clipped fin. When I called to tell the local office, I was first told that no, they had not clipped that fin, then after a second or two, he said yes, they had trapped it, very close to where I got it and they were not able to determine sex, so they had done a different clip on that fish.

Posts: 304 Location: Lino Lakes, MN | going way back to the mid 90's they started fin clipping either a left or right pelvic fin. Each stocking class got clipped on alternating sides. I believe that they stocked every 3 years in the 90's. All stocked fish are getting fin clips to this day. This helps when they have there muskie assesments every 4 years. It helps determine naturally reproduced muskies vs stocked.

Posts: 198 | Sometimes the clipped fin will regenerate or partially regenerate. Sometimes it takes a close examination to determine if its clipped or not. There is some natural reproduction in Vermilion but how much is the real question. There seems to be some areas of the lake with few fish in them so increased stocking in these sections could improve the fishery.
