Hey guys,

I'm new to the game but rigging up for some muskie fishing with my dad. I've been reading a lot from your posts, so thanks for your insights!

Here's the trolling setups I'm looking at. Let me know your feedback and thanks!

Out Rods:

2 - Shimano TDR 9' MH with Okuma Coldwater 303DLX spooled with 20lb Big Game & 48" 100lb Fluoroleader with a direct snap(no swivel).

Prop/Down Rods:

2 - Ugly Stik Tiger 7' (already have these) MH. One with an Avet SX and one with an Avet MXL spooled with 20l Big Game & 48" 100lb Fluroleader with a direct snap (no swivel).

I'm thinking these rods would allow us to pull most lures up to 10" including large cranks and spinners. Do you think I'm on the right track?

On the right track but I'd recommend the TDR 8' Heavy and 80lb line

why would you not run a swivel while trolling? sounds like trouble. I also would use a heavier line

I'd like to add, using a non levelwind reel such as the avet may pose problems for you as well depending how familiar you are with the reel and if you can operate it when a rod goes off.

Thanks for the replies. I already have the down/prop rods and Avet reels. I use them right now offshore fishing from my kayak on the gulf coast - so I won't have an issue with them. We're moving North so I'm looking to get into Muskie.

I was reading that a swivel at the main line end of the leader can cause problems as you won't be able to pull it into the reel if you want to and a blood knot was recommended for main line to leader connection. On the lure end, the swivel part of the clasp can take away some of the movement of the lure.

Also, when you recommend the 8' TDR Heavy rods, what do you recommend those as a replacement for (out rods, down rods, or both?)

Also, I should have added I don't plan to start with planers.

If you use a bucktail you will need a ball bearing swivel.

Use swivels. The first time a bait gets fouled and starts spinning, you'll wish you had a swivel. I use 2. One on either side of the Inline weight I like to use to catch weeds and as an attractor and still get line twist with some baits that really pound. The bait isn't spinning but for some reason the weight does.

I would rather tune the bucktail so it doesnt spin. No swivel necessary.

I have even bent the wire up by the eye on bucktails and they spun on a retrieve. I can't imagine a bucktail not getting spin trolled for long periods at 3+ mph. Not only would I recommend a swivel but a trolling rudder or a weight attached above the leader so you have a point at which the line won't spin.

I use 4 of the 8' heavy TDRs as my down rods and prop rods, and 2 of the 9' MH as my out rods. I run 36", 130lb flouro with swivels. When trolling bucktails I always run sinkers. With 12oz I get down roughly 5' having 20' of line out. I will also run 6oz sinkers for my prop rods on occasion to keep baits directly below the boat when short lining
