This is kind of a long shot, but I'll try anyway.

About to take my kids on their first "roughing it" camping trip. I'm aware of a couple sites on Star Island of Cass, but I assume they're very popular and already occupied by Thursday every weekend. I know Vermilion has many, but from what I've seen they're all very rocky - not a good place to park a nice boat.

What else is out there? I'm curious if any of the Longville area lakes have boat-up campsites.

Preferably musky water, of course.

Thanks!

might want to consider Dumbbell Lake...it's a bit out of the way and very rustic...you might have to get a bit creative on the boat but that's a great lake for kids to get muskies on, and it's beautiful up there

Thanks for those suggestions. I've camped on Spider many times, so it's on my list of options.

Bear Island on Leech has a couple USFS sites at the "beach" on the west side of the lake. The sites have a typical grate and potty just like the ones in the BWCAW. Deer flies there will destroy you if your'e not prepared. Boat and kid friendly otherwise and Pelican and North Bar are right out front.

Mantrap lake has sites. Vermilion has sites with docks at Wakemup Bay Campground if the docks are full there is non-rocky shoreline to park. There are sites at Federal Dam on Leech. All of these are group sites so I'm not sure if that is "roughing it" for you. Wakemup and Mantrap are first come first serve but I haven't seen them full. I've stayed at the island on Cass in mid-summer and it had open spots most of the weekend.

Mantrap's campground is a drive up site. I'm not sure if you can park a boat on a dock overnight. Either way it is a cool lake to fish.

The Mississippi River has a few designated camping spots on it if you are into trying the river. Check out online maps of canoe routes and campsites on MN DNR website under water trails.

Rainy Lake has campsites on some islands and some have docks. Have not camped there but saw them while on the lake. I think they are part of the national park.
