Which do you use for trolling, Mono or Braid? And for what reason?

i use mono for trolling all short lines......like 15 ft of line out or less. i use 25# trilene xt. i feel the little bit of cushion helps keep them pinned on a short leash like that. has worked real good for me and never had a line failure in over 25 years. i've had them almost come into the boat after hitting a rod that has 5 ft of line out after going airborn on the strike. i use 65# braid for all of the other sets longer than that. i mostly use 60# sevenstrand leaders and for clear water go to 80# floro. sometimes.

Both will work. One rule of thumb fiberglass/braid, graphite/mono but not a set in stone rule. I use some of my rods as dual purpose trolling/suckers so I use braid. Baits will also run deeper per feet of line out with braid. Mono works better with planer board clips, no need to double wrap. Even locking clips can slip with braid. Much of this is personal preference.

I always use a long fluoro leader. If you use a long sevenstrand leader make sure it is a coated one. Muskies love to roll in the line when trolled. Mono, flouor and coated wire will not damage the fish.

ToddM ... do they roll less if you speed up and drag em in faster? what kind of doughnuts and beer are best for trolling?

Don't overlook steel line which will get you deeper faster and some feel is better at shedding weeds but I think the big attraction is the vibration. If you carefully watch the Musky Hunter episodes where Saric fishes with Mike Lazarus he has as many wire lines out as braid even tho wire is not mentioned in the credits. Shawn Mahar maker of the Hosebaits has been a fan of wire on Georgian Bay for as long as I've known him which is a long time. My experience with wire for muskies is limited but as I make the transition from caster to old fart troller it is something I plan to explore more. I'm considering it as a way to put double 10's and 13's somewhat deeper without extra weight or downriggers.

Leadcore is another option which seems to be a favourite line on the Niagara River

single strand wire is great, supplies a different vibration in the water and at time is can make a difference. Plus landing a fish on wire is an experience.

That might work for Ohio fish but I wouldn't suggest using 25# on large muskies.

I use 100lb braid with a 4 foot 130 lb flouro leader in case they roll. It has worked well for me. I'm mainly a caster though.

well i've taken fish up to 35 lbs on this set-up in ohio and never had an issue, and yes they roll here also. i'm mainly casting also but when the water warms the fish follow the shad out into the main lake and scatter. so its trollin time here. good luck out there and hope you have a good year.

I'm no authority, but when I was out on Thursday I had Surly He!! in the cooler and a couple of twisty sugar donuts from the Hayward Bakery. It must have worked, because I had a musky in the net within the first 15 minutes.

My annual physical is coming up in August. I really should have scheduled it before July 1st, because all this trolling is taking its toll and the result is sure to cause my doctor to give me a good scolding. Then again, he's a FIB so maybe he understands trolling. Heck, at least I have an excuse....

Most of my trolling setups are with 80 lb braid and a 4' 130lb fluorocarbon leader. I do run wire line in the fall on certain lakes where the ciscoes suspend in the 23-28' range and that's 27lb wire tied straight to the bait. Never ran mono but I see no reason to either.

Sled, my fishing partner went with your standard chocolate donut today trolling for salmon. I went with pecans, cashews and some rice crispy treats. Sled they don't roll untill you bring them in. Being a troller, you could not possibly be in any kind of shape to reel them in fast enough to keep them from doing it. It's hard enough to stick the butt of the rod in your gut and still have the reel exposed. We put a 24" extension on all our trolling rods.

I could not imagine using leadcore for musky fishing, 10 colors is 300ft I can't imagine bow much you would need to have an impact on.a musky bait. Copper would be better but still, would need alot I would think.
