Posts: 1126 Location: Minnesota. | So, we're spooled up with 80# braided line and tossing bucktails around the rock pile in a wind. You get hung, what do you do/use to break off? I wondered about this last year on the "V" and decided to toss in a 1 1/2" dia. bare branch-butt about a foot long just in case. How do you do it? Thanks.

Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | sworrall - 4/23/2015 6:17 PM Boat cleat. Some time's it work's some time's you loose your bait. On the other hand when it's calm and you can use your trolling motor to dive up on a reef I've found some nice baits

Posts: 859 Location: MN | I always carry a break stick, chunk of oak dowel about as thick as a nickle. Edited by NathanH 4/23/2015 7:27 PM

Posts: 815 Location: Waukee, IA | I flathead fish a lot which leads to lots of snags. I just wrap the line around a stick or the head of my needle nose pliers and pull.

Posts: 38 | Learned to snap the line like a bow fishing with Herbie on Eagle. If you pull it really tight and let your line snap loose 9 times out of ten it pops out of the rocks without going to chase it down

Posts: 122 Location: Appleton Wi | If the water is shallow enough, grab that line and follow it to the snag! I'd rather do that than lose a lure

Posts: 1126 Location: Minnesota. | Thanks boys. I wasn't sure what most do so I was curious. Ive learned some good stuff here. Got a good grin out of some... If I had to break off (likely) I'd go back the next calm day and swim for it!

Posts: 8729 | 1. Get directly in line with the lure 2. Thumb the spool with both hands 3. Extend your arms 4. Take a step back, swivel your hips, and rip as hard as you can. Anger helps the process immensely. So does cursing the lure with a string of expletives that would make your mother roll over in her grave. And she's still alive... 5. Spend the rest of the day wondering why your reel is wobbling Yes, you can bend a spool shaft. It's not as difficult as one would think. Not one of my finer moments there... I've found that most times all you need to do is get a different angle, give it a few pops, and the lure will come free. I've tried Herbies trick a few times. It never worked for me. In extreme cases? Boat cleat. It's pretty surprising that 80# braid is actually stronger than the hooks and split rings on most lures.

Posts: 833 | If you are just hung on a rock you could try the old "Guitar String" trick. I learned it on Vermilion from a fellow North Metro chapter member, not sure if it was his idea or someone else's, but it usually does the job. Basically just got the line taught and point your rod at the bait. Then pluck the line between the reel and the first guide once as if you were playing a note on a guitar. Usually doing this a few times will get the bait free. Obviously if the whole lure is jammed between rocks vs. just a hook this will not work and that is when other methods are needed. I agree on going in to get it if that is possible.
