How many times a season do you find yourself clearing bird nests from your reel???

Ok.. the rat nest here is defined beyond a single pull on the line and you sitting down, beads of sweat while you peck away at it like a hungry chicken and your buddy just hooked a 50 kind of nest.
also includes getting the knife out and giving your line a salon style cut.

Define rat's nest. Like something you have to sit down and contemplate for a while, or a minor backlash?

Kirby's question is spot on...need some clarification on this one.

"Sit down and pick it out" once or twice.
"backlash" where I have to just pull line to free the mess? once an outing.

I don't get bad ones anymore. Lucky to get one small one a day if that.

Kirby, leave my "good" name out of this!:-)

Not so often anymore. It still happens when I get careless. My best one ever was after a day throwing double 10's. I put on an unweighted suick, and not thinking just flung a cast like I had the last several hundred casts. Into the wind.

ZOTTTT!!!!!!!

It's very hard to concentrate on a backlash when everyone in the boat is laughing.

Then yeah, I've had a few in my day but I can't remember having one in the past couple years. So I admit I'm the one who voted never Of course my first cast this year will be a big rat's nest I'm sure!

I started this poll to see if there are others out there like my buddy whom I often fish with. He is responsible for the summer bird and mice migration phenomenon. They follow him to the lake just to get a glimpse of the new homes being built. He is also the guy who changes baits every 4 casts and I believe that is cause for a good number of em.

I get a little one every few trips that takes a second to fix and a nasty one that takes a while once or twice a year. Like EA said most the time it happens right after changing baits.

In my boat we tend to rely on the Fujita scale. See link here:

http://www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/f-scale.html Note the third column "typical damage"

An F4 typically involves a knife or scissors; an F5 usually can't be fixed in the boat.

Not so much anymore. Used to get some unbelievable ones when I was a kid. I will still get a couple of one or two pull/pick out ones these days - mainly when casting into the wind or changing baits and not having the reel properly adjusted.

I used to be referred to as "downtime" because of the amount of nests that would happen to me. Now I probably help others clear more nests more than I did, I think it had to do with practice makes perfect. lol

I throw way too many unweighted 10" Suicks not to get an occasional one, hardly ever a head scratcher though.

It's tough to get a rats nest with the reels I use now days. My first year now that's a whole other story. I spend more time doing others reels than my own now.

You need to get one on occasion in order to check your knot strength.

I'm sure there's guides out there that see some works of art every year. Also, I'm guessing, a crappy part of the job.

That's funny!

I voted maybe once or twice, but it might not even be that. Many trips might have one or two that just thumbing the spool and raising the rod clears what little backlash there is. Not very often does it take much picking and thinking to clear one, but it does still happen from time to time. Certain baits into the wind are just tough sometimes.

I think the last time I had to actually cut line was waaaayy back when I was a kid with my first bass sized baitcaster. I must have forgot to use my thumb at all once or twice. That was pretty rough on a 9 year old that wrecked a $10 spool of Gorilla braid. 10 bucks was a lot when money came in at a dollar or two per week.

Andrew, it's okay to admit that you still take a teddy bear with you wherever you go. I know it's a tought crowd around here, but we won't think any less of you.

Now, the women's lingerie thing? That's just weird...

I don't have to many, learned to set up my reels to prevent rats nests, and am very careful casting into wind. Most of the ones I now deal with are some else's......

Slamr - that's a real rat's nest! Hint: Get yourself a small crochet hook, it makes getting the rats nest out much easier. Knowing your skill level you probably want this kit!

http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewing/Crochet-Master-Steel-and-Alu...

You want a crochet hook that just fits your line diameter, that way you can slide it down the buried wrap and pull it out without grabbing another wrap.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_standard_crochet...

Have fun!

i'd never had a rat's nest that couldn't be extracted ... until last year. it was a cool story (at least to me) ... we had 3 customers up and 2 others and i took them out to hopefully catch a first musky for them prior to an important business meeting. no fish would still be a win with time on the water in the northwoods for them in an otherwise hectic travel and business life. i had the key buyer in my boat and although he struggled right off the bat, i kept my eye on him hoping i had enough reels and that he would be nice enough to let me pull out the loose line on occasion and re-load him which he did. it's embarrassing for people who aren't comfortable. as it got dark it got worse and i could tell he was getting frustrated ... i had him loaded with a shallow invader so at least if the bait was in the water, it was doing its job. after a pretty long time of him saying "I'm fine" ... knowing he wasn't by the sound ... he hooked up. we got the fish in the bag and success for a first musky, big smile and later we found we were the only one of the three boats that scored on a shortish evening on the water. his first cast after landing the fish it happened. i bragged about how i could get anything out so no problem ... well, not so much. i dug and dug, plucked and pulled and used all of my tricks. had to cut the line but it was so worth it!! he went home with bragging rights and the snugglepuss has been long forgotten. i'm sure it will come back in june when they return for another visit ... but, we got the business!!!!

what i've learned is that women and kids are easier to teach than men. men know it all ...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^

That is the exact reason I don't coach boys high school basketball. Can't tell them a darn thing. Girls on the other hand listen and are willing to learn and try! Coached girls for the last thirteen years...great listeners. The execution might not always be there, but the effort always is.

Truer words have never been spoken....

I taught Samantha how to cast. 15 minutes in the yard and a few hours on the water to get the hang of the reel and how to get a lure to go further than 20 feet. Easy Peasy. Within half a day (Eagle Lake, baptism by fire) she was hitting everything she aimed at. 45"er on her first day. She rarely gets a backlash. Nailed the first fish she had follow up. Perfect figure 8, good hookset, listened to every word we were screaming in her ear as she fought the fish. Her only downfall is wanting to keep up with the boys throwing double 10's all day.

We taught her 6 year old nephew to cast. I think he made about half a dozen bad casts before he got it. Listened to everything we told him, and caught a handful of fish his first day.

But guys? Holy crap batman... "Yeah, yeah, I got this!" *Zzzt- POW!* *Bazzott!!!*

Over and over and over again. Backlash city, lures 20 feet up on shore, not doing figure 8's, lures snagged on this and that...

Most guys are so determined to prove that they can do something that they refuse to listen to the people who actually DO know how to do it. It's like a monkey $&%ing a football...

I would rather teach 10 women to do something than one man.
