Well long story short, looks like my brother and I will be moving to the Twin City area (within 30 mins southwest) in May. Any tips on lakes and summer strategy? I only know of the obvious like any other musky nut that doesnt actually fish MN...Mille Lacs, Vermillion, Bemidji, Tonka, LOTW, and the like. I know a lot of those are far away too. Ive spent a lot of time scowering maps of all the lakes in the state, but no idea if they offer good muskies, or muskies at all?

So maybe I will get laughed at here, but any advice at all on fishing within say, an hour of Eden Prairie?

There are 10-12 lakes in the TC Metro area that are excellent. This metro area has a number of terrific musky lakes which is one of the great advantages of living in the TC metro area. Join one of the 2 Musky Inc groups in the metro and you will have access to a lot of great information.

JakeStCroixSkis I am moving to Plymouth MN in the next month or so and am in the same position... Hit me up a PM and we can learn some of these waters together. I have a nice Ranger if you want to share the water trying out some of the waters... I grew up fishing MN but have spent some time in WI since college so I may be dusty but a musky is a musky so what I have learned over the years should apply to these fish no matter the waters.

no doubt! you had me at ranger, haha. no just kidding, but i will definitely hit you up.

Thanks for everyones help. I have only fished muskies on my home waters, the St Lawrence River (NY side) and its tributaries. Night and day compared to lake fishing!

I live in plymouth as well. You have half a dozen great lakes within 20 minutes of you. Tonka alone could qualify as 8 different lakes.

Visit Thorne as well

I don't get over to the west side very often anymore, it's sooooo far away. I mostly stay on the east side. We are pretty spoiled in the metro, so much so that I don't even go to the trouble of driving across town anymore. I think all of the lakes are pretty good. Don't even think about how to fish these lakes, or what baits to use. Do what the bass guys do on heavily pressured water. Start with the obvious things, and then go to crazy stuff-the opposite of what you see everyone else doing. There are a lot of really nice fish in all these lakes, and they do bite. They just see a lot of lures on a regular basis. The tiger lakes don't usually have too many over 40" fish, as that is the legal size for them, and the bass guys like to take them out as soon as they are legal, but they make good slump busting lakes.

Another option seeing as your a river guy is the St Croix. Like everything in the metro it gets BUSY, but if you can fish off hours, or just deal with the pleasure boaters, there are some nice fish to be found. And it might cut the learning curve a little compared to going from river to lake.

Metro fishing,,,work on anger management skills=boat traffic especially in the west metro.
Good alarm clock,,5am to 11:30am makes for a nice day on weekends or in the summer after that it's 3 footers even if the wind isn't blowing.
Watch where you park,,not for safety but not everybody fits into the parking spots at landings and local neighborhood s ticket/tow especially at the city lakes.
Buy puke like colors,,most of the best metro guys I know have some baits that lock like Picasso paintings metro fish see everything over and over in standard colors.
Network,,get those cell quick dials filled metro lakes are fairly close together and when your out probably the other hard core guys are too if their lake is going especially in the spring you can just hop on over.

If you're gonna be living in Eden Prairie you've got Tonka, Waconia, and Independence within a stones throw. What more do you need

I agree. More 50's in those lakes than people give credit for.
Although... the north bound sanity, serenity thing is a must when possible.

Only been once but got a good hamburger on Tonka. Sugar lake is not big but really nice. Be carefull you can`t drive around with Sigmond the seamonster on your trailor like you do out here. They actually care about invasives out there.

Fisherman care here too. Just there is not much awareness among the general public.
