Trying to decide which series is better for all purpose musky use...I was wondering if one or the other had a wider spool? The bearing and gear ratios a fairly similar too.
Want to pair it with a St. Croix MH 7 footer.

Thanks, look forward to responses.

C3 is your all purpose reel. The C4 is a high speed reel, good for jerkbaits and twitching crankbaits but not bucktails.

C4 can be used for bucktails, but not the big ones like 10s.

JMO, I think you'll be happier with a C3 for an all purpose reel. Both have the same size spool but the gear ratios will feel alot different.

C3. A better gear choice for all around use. The power handle is a nice option if you like that over the double paddle. The 6500 would be my first choice, and the 5500 would be second. Either will work well for casting. To keep your 7' rod a little lighter, you may want to look at the 5500 for it... that would be a nice, compact combo. My thoughts anyway. Good luck.

^ agree with Cedar. I had a 7' Lamiglas with a 5500 C3 as my only set up for years. That is a nice all around combo.

Most of the guys on here seem to know alot more than me so I'd take their word for the 5500 opinions. I however always preferred the 6500s due to the extra line capacity (although not necessary)....furthermore, to me the 5500s always made it look and feel like a bass fishing setup because of the smaller size, silly I know, just sayin'

Yes the 6500 has a wider spool. Nothing wrong with that, I prefer the smaller reel in hand as well as for the balance. There is plenty of line capacity on the 5500. It is really about your preference. You can't go wrong with either.

Agree with Clammer above about the balance of the 5500 with a 7'er. The 6500 will hold more line, but if you are just casting, the 5500 will hold almost 100 yds of 80 lb line, which is enough for casting (even some short line trolling). The 5500/6500 are the same reel, but the 6500 is a bit wider. Both are good reels... try both in hand, and see which one you like better.

When i started i bought a C3 6500 and put it on my 7'6" rod. I am still using it now. Its a great reliable reel for the price

Thanks everyone! I'm sold!!! I've been a spinning guy my whole life and now that I jumped into the musky world, I knew I had to turn the corner. This seems like a safe bet.

have you thought about a calcutta 400B? just throwing that out there. What's your budget? If it's a used 6500 you can get them for like $50 on here when they pop up. Otherwise you might want to take a look at a calcutta 400B
