Looking at buying a boat with a 250 Etec and wanted to get some feedback from folks who use one now

Thanks!

They are great engines! Never had any issues with mine. On my ranger bass boat i can get up to 70+ any day! You'll love it!

I think it's always best to check with a few marine independent mechanics about such things.

If it's a used boat have the motor checked out make sure every thing is good

I went for a ride in a Ranger with the new G2 late this fall, does that count ?

I have always been a Mercury guy myself, but I was pretty impressed with the power of the G2. It had no problem making that big Ranger just go ...

a friend of mine had one and had nothing but problems with it. after several times at the shop and a ton of missed time on the water he ended up replacing it with a big 4 stroke and could not be happier. probably the exception not the rule but I personally would not own one.

Depends on the year. The early years had problems (as most motors do) and the later years were better. Only downside of the newer ones that I know if is they use more gas and oil then Merc/Yami and the Rude oil seems to be more expensive from what I've seen.

My buddy has a 2010 on his Ranger 620. Sweet motor, but loves gas and oil. Although, he does run wide open a lot. Best case is getting 2 - 2.5 miles per gallon and the problem is adding a $50 gallon of oil with almost every tank of gas. If you're running big water, it's going to get very expensive.

Personally, after seeing the amount of money we have spent on gas and oil on LOTW the past few years, I would get a 4 stroke.

The mileage of the 4 stroke may not be a whole lot better than the the Etec, but if you fish a lot, you're going to save hundreds of dollars a year in oil.
