I am embarrassed to admit I was stumped as well but- it only works when on the "sonar chart" not the navionics map or government map. On the lower left of the screen there is a blue N circle, hit that and select sonar, then menu at the bottom and up where the words are you can scroll down to create what ever you like, have a piece of lake on the bottom that you know so you can see your changes as you make them
