I would get a service report from a dealer for the motor. The e-tec computers log every error and that could be helpful to understand what history the motor has.

I just bought a new 50 hp etec in January and I can say so far, that i am impressed. I talked with my local dealer about the issues that they see and he recommended the etec over the other brands they carried. I get 37.8 mph by myself and better mileage than my 25 2 stroke carb motor. I am getting over 13 mph cruising at 29-30mph.

There was a software recall on the 60 hp motors, so I would make sure that was up to date as well. If the motor is set to XD-100, you do have to run that oil only. Plugs for "normal maintenance" have to be indexed, so typically guys buy 4 plugs for an I-2 to make sure they can index them properly. Other than that, the maintenance is virtually the same as any other motor (filters, lower unit oil, greasing, check hardware, etc).

http://www.etecownersgroup.com/ should have more than enough resources to answer your questions.
