Best advice I can give you is don't let motor sit in down position when not in use. In other words always keep motor propped on transom saver when not in use. Service guys have told me this should not have any effect on whether it fails or not but the last two times mine failed it was:

1. Cold- below freezing
2. Motor was in down position on the trailer as I wanted to make sure water was out.
