Without having been in either boat myself, I think you'll see a big difference in the Recon 985 at 99" wide and 19'4" long (big boat territory in my mind), vs the 85" beam and 17'2" length of the 785.

With that said, my Tuffy 1760 is pretty roomy at 17'6" and 85" wide, but mine is also a pretty wide open tiller layout, and the GT (capless) version as well.

I must say I do like the back deck/rear side tank layout of the Recon boats and it sounds like they have pretty nice rod storage.

Maybe others with experience in both boats will chime in, but before buying one I think you'll have to take a look at each to reach a comfortable decision.
