Just did this myself too. Used a blade from a block plane to remove the stickers, then sprayed goo gone on the residue; let sit for a few minutes, used the blade again, then finished with a non-scratch scouring pad. Took about 20 minutes with very little elbow power. Heading down to the local print shop next week for a custom reg# decal.
