painting over a clear coat, can this be done? I am pretty sure it is but just wondering some procedures that have to be taken inorder for this to work.
I am actually looking for tips on this cuz my dad saw some repaints of baits I did and now he wants a colored scale pattern over his black yamaha royal star.

Hey Joe,
Yes, You can rough up the bait with a ultra fine scotch-brite pad. Do your painting as needed and then shoot with the clear coat. All your colors that were there will pop right back along with any new details you added.
Here are a few that were done this way.

Painting a metal tank and fenders on a cycle with automotive style clear will probably be different than painting over a clear coat on lures. I'd check with a couple local body shops, or contact someone at a place like House of Kolors paints and see what they recommend.

Don, what do you mean ultrafine 400grit? I have som pads from 3m which is, what I consider ultra fine, and need to put a layer of extra clear on a bait.

Scotch-brite ultra fine scuffing pads or prep pads. I did not mention 400 grit in my previous post.
You get these at an automotive paint store. All of the baits I posted above are done with urethane paints and the orange under the nose is a House of Kolor paint.
Good luck with the bike.

I know that you didnt mention any grit, but I was curious what you meant with ultra fine
Guess I have to visit some automotive shops. Thanks

That is what it is. Scotch brite pads in very fine grade. They will be a gray color. Fine will be colored a dull red. The auto paint stores will have them. Maybe a different brand name but they will have ultra fine pads. Sand paper and emory paper is rated as a grit size but I have not seen the pads rated that way. Great question though.

Thanks again, I will look into it. Its one of the sacret Beaver baits that needs an extra layer of clear. And I dont want to mess it up.

I don't blame you a bit! Those baits are awesome! That guy is an artist for sure and a heck of a craftsman. I have not purchased one yet but I plan to in the future.
Good Luck with it,

I use Medallion 3 minute urethane clearcoat number RS-2600-Q and Medallion fast activator number RS-2260-8.
The mix is 4 parts clear to 1 part activator. I hit the baits with 2 wet coats of clear and let them sit for 24 hours. Rough them up with the ultra fine scotch brite pads and hit them again with 2 coats clear. then flash at 140 degrees in my paint booth for 30 minutes.
